Hi All,
I'm planning a 110 overland camper project and I was wondering if anyone has ever made slide out side panels in the back?

The idea is to have storage/cupboards that are inside the back when driving but when stopped I can slide them out to give more space inside for living!
I know big american style campers have whole walls that slide out to make whole rooms but this would just be the van sides in the back of the 110...

What do you think? Would it work and has anyone done it?

What part are you looking to slide out? Everything above the wheel arches? I can see this being an incredibly difficult undertaking with regards to keeping out water and dirt. At least in my eyes it wouldn't be worth the effort. Within the small space, the sliding mechanism would probably take up more space than you'd gain. I've never seen it being done before.

Sorry I should have been more clear, just the almost vertical section above the tub where a window would usually go. Same idea as those gullwing windows
My thinking is that with it all the way out there will be space to sit down on the wheel arch and then it will be iver the wheel arch when moving but I'll be in the front then.

Sorry for being so negative but,,,,,,,,,,,
how will you seal the outers when shut ?
how will you seal the slide outs when open ? for water and security ?
I can think of plenty of problems, not many (any) solutions.

If its not been done before and therefore no established ideas to take inspiration from, I was planning to look at how the systems work in big RVs as they are pretty common and are both sealed and secure.

Security on an RV is not so much of a problem, when the slide out is activated you are actually still IN it, whereas a slide out drawer or cabinet may be vulnerable to theft from the outside even while you sleep on the inside.

One of the Land Rover mags in recent months had one in it with slide out sides. I can't give any more info as I just don't have time to sort through mags and find it. But it has been done and it was a good effort too.
