Silly question - does an FL2 engine/box/front cross member etc bolt into an FL1? Just wondering aloud if maybe someone put all the front end stuff off a 2 into a 1 for an unknown reason...

if it is a 6 speed it will save a lot of fuel

I doubt it. The 1.8 has such a small torque output, the driver will need to use wider throttle openings just to maintain speed. This actually reduces the efficiency by quite a large degree.

I really want to know more about this curious gearbox - the selector quadrants are all strange too (1,3,5 and 6 forward???)

All PG1 gearboxes are 5-speed.

The only 6-speed conversion I know about is Quaife - which as Nodge says, is a £6k option, with a more conventional shift pattern (I think???) or available as a sequential.

The Ford IB6 6-speed is said to fit the K-series (the IB5 was used in later Rover 25s and ZRs and there are conversion kits to permit IB5 to IB6 upgrades) - but I am sure that this gearbox would not be compatible with the IRD.

Curiouser and curiouser!

I'm hoping we've stumbled across a rare LR development vehicle. It won't happen but one day...

That didn't make sense to me either. A conventional 6 speed box layout is 1,3,5 forward and 2,4,6 backwards.
Reverse is normally at either extreme end and is blocked by a lift ring or stiff spring, to prevent accidental selection.

if you don't use motor ways 6th is a waste of time. I very rarely get into 5th due to the gear ratio.
Anything over 30mph and mines in 5th. Even driving along at 30 I have the urge to put it in 5th and will do, but its not very safe cos if I put my foot down the ECU would say NO.

Are you sure you're not trying to put it in 6th

I think it is an illusion. When I'm in 5th at speed it feels like it needs another gear. Once or twice I've thought I was in 3rd and tried changing up, it felt like it was going into another gear but when taking my foot off the clutch there was no difference, I was in 5th and although it felt like the lever moved over a bit, it was still 5th. Hope this makes sense.

On all my cars with 5-speed gearboxes I’ve been wishing for a 6th - although this is only ever when on the motorway... :)
