2020 was a year of many firsts... but for me it was finding out that Land Rovers also came with a straight six! :cool:

Don't ask me how I had managed to miss this fact, but now I know they're out there I need to know all about them! Please show me whatever pictures you've got! What do they look like under the bonnet? what's special and particular to them? what are they like? how many are left? what's the origin of the engine?

Come on LandyZone, fact me up on six cylinder Series! :D
 
A 109 with the IOE 6 pot would be my ideal Land rover.
This one I spied at a classic car show a few years ago

I have one of those, just awaiting a chassis to be delivered to start a rebuild. I like the idea of petrol rather than diesel and having had a non turbo 4 pot years ago I decided I wanted the extra power.
Looking forward to getting it on the road.:D

How much extra power are you expecting? The 6 pots are 2.5 litre aren't they, will the extra 225cc give much extra power considering the engine must be a fair bit heavier?

2.6 straight 6 - 86 bhp @ 4500 rpm and 131 lb/ft torque @ 1500 rpm. It was only 7.8:1 comp ratio. It is possible to fit a 'Westlake' head from a Rover P4/5 to increase power but some variants require the modification to the bellhousing iirc.
I bought this one a few years ago, but it was too far gone for me to restore. I sold it to a welder/fabricator who was going to rebuild it but so far I've not seen it about. Its still on the DVLA website but not taxed or MOTd.

The other side ain't so pretty,

and the engine is seized, but I did get it cheap and it was always the intention to start from a new chassis and completely rebuild it from the bottom up.
Chassis ordered and due next month, or possibly the month after if they are running behind
 
Were the six cylinder engined models a lot more expensive when they were new? There don't seem to be many about now.

Has anyone on here even seen a 6cyl fitted into an 88 as an engine swap?
 
Yes a friend has a bitsa- the 6 cylinder engine is almost as pointless as the 2.25 diesel. hugely inefficient, drinks like my wife and apart from the purring noise barely as powerful as a well sorted or improved 4 pot.
I think it was a desperate act of land rover when people started telling the truth about their engines- the most underrated engine is the 2.5 petrol, which is much better than the 6 pot.
 
You don't have a series because it is the most efficient vehicle you could have so efficiency really isn't an issue.
 
I have owned a number of land rovers and still have 6 to play with- I have never seen any evidence to make me think the six cylinder was any good, unless you mean the Ford V6 Essex or cologne- which are magnificent!
 
But thats the point, if the decision to own a series landrover was evidence based then nobody would ever have one.
I bought mine when it had been off the road for nearly 20 years and with a seized engine. I am quite happy to rebuild it and bring it back to life. Its not about economics, fuel efficiency, power or comfort. I just wanted one and since all the reviews I have read say it is slightly more powerful, smoother and has more torque I am happy that it will be slightly better than a standard version, petrol or diesel.
However this is all relative, for the money it will cost to rebuild I know I could have bought something far better in every respect, but it wouldn't be a Landrover 109 with a six pot!:D

As long as you're happy- that is the joy of land rovers... mine all have differing characteristics and qualities.

2.6 6pot are a nice drive, not much faster than a 4 cylinder, but smoother, and a bit more torque.
The main criticism of them in my mind is that setting the tappets is a horrible job.
