OK.. I know this is bound to be here already somewhere so can someone point me in the right direction... abuse for muppetry accepted but I can't find what I am looking for in the search...

what do all the numbers mean?? I sort of think I know that a 90 is a SWB defender and a 110 is a lwb defender, what about all the other numbers...

someone told me my 1998 disco 1 was a 300... there was me thinking it was a Landrover Discovery V8i ES - so wtf is 300 about it????? (litres per 100km perhaps)
 
200 and 300 refer to the type of diesel engine. Most people are usually fairly clued up on whether they've got a diesel or a petrol so if you think its a V8 then its unlikely to be a 300.
90 & 110 refer to the chassis length in inches if I remember rightly.
 
ah think yule find the 90,110,86,88,109 etc all refer to wheelbase rather than chassis length

the (apparently now) muppet that told me it was a 300 was going from a picture when I was trying to id whether it was a disco 1 or 2 - being a 98 apparently it could have been either... so how he could think he knew it was a 300 from a pic I have no idea lol...

so what does the 200 and 300 refer to then? or is it just made up LR codes that id the different engine types?
 
If he had a pic of the engine he could see if it was a 200 or a 300(probbably) but seing it was a v8 then his barking up the wrong tree there.
For a rough guide 110, 90,88, etc refers to wheel base in inches. 300, 200 refer to the tdi injuns, td5, td4 also dezul injuns, and then theres the v8's(which i like!).
 
I like v8's too... seems there are a few different ones of them too... I have a 4 litre apparently although it says 3.9 on top of the lump... is there a 3.5 and a 4.6 as well...

also although I love the noise my v8 makes it seems to have lost some of its horses... need to find them at some point... I presume they drip out with the oil...
 
The original Discoveries had the 200Tdi engine fitted, then they had a face lift and were fitted with a 300Tdi. The terms 200 & 300 tend to be used genericaly even when a V8 is fitted. The Series 2 Discoveries had the TD5 engine, and so are sometimes called that, again even if they actually have a V8.
As Slob pointed out the 88, 90, 110 etc refer to the wheelbase in inches, but just to confuse things the wheel base of the 90 is 92.5 inches, and the 130 has a 128" wheel base!
I can't understand how anybody could be confused!

So the disco 1 face lift with any of the three types of engines are all call 300 series.
The disco series 2 had the Td5 and a V8 known a 4.0 ltr although it's the same cc as the 3.9.
4.2 and 4.6 ltr V8 engines are installed in the Range Rover
The wheel base on a D1 is a 100 inches the same as the RR clasic.
 
thanks everyone... well I like it whatever it is... but seems being a 300 V8 I have the best of the bunch eh... and are all V8's v8i's and are all V8i's ES's.....
 
200tdi was so called because of the amount of torque it produced, (nearly 200 foot pounds) and the 300tdi is so called because it was the third phase of the tdi engine development project. The second being for the mod.

What book do u have?
Mine's Land Rover Discovery 1989=1998 by James Taylor published by Motor Racing Publications @ £9.99

It's full of info.
 
You and your Discovery, published by haynes. I think it was about £15.
The mrs calls me a geek but it is a great read
 
Don't need a book, I remember when they came out. All the Land Rover enthusiasts agreed it was probably what the market needed, but it wasn't a proper Land Rover, and true enthusiasts would never own one.
A bit like Freelanders today?

How daft, not a proper Land Rover, point at some mud or even better muddy water and there you go.

That said, they leak,they rust, break down, drink heavily and all sorts of other bad habits, how much more proper Land Rover can you get:D:D On the other hand, look at how much stuff you can put on 'em, suspesion lifts, big mud tyres, winch, lots of lights etc etc... definately a Land Rover.
 
I quite agree, I was just pointing out what people were saying in the late 80s when they were introduced.
 
well I know it isn't a proper landrover by 1980's standards but then nore's a defender really.. not enough gear sticks and a silly permanent 4 wheel drive system...
