There I have to contradict you, but you can easily proof it for yourself, just close your eyes and walk/run into a pole, even with your eyes closed I am pretty sure you'll see stars. Try it and let us know please so that for once and for all our doubts will be gone ???

But surely with my eyes closed there is still traces of light that get through my eye lids. A blind man wouldn't see squat would he? What causes us to see stars if we bang our heads? Maybe it's nothing to do with whether the optics in our heads work or not

Found this article on a forum which may help explain the "seeing stars" experience.
"I know that the neurons in the eye are capable of responding to a physical
stimulus. If you poke your eye in the right place, for example, the neurons are
stimulated and you will see a spot in your visual field. So I guess if you
bang your head you could just be physically stimulating the neurons in your
eyes. Or
maybe the neurons in the visual cortex are physically stimulated by a hit to the
head resulting in the perception of spots or stars in the visual field.
Could also involve blood flow. Transient restrictions in blood flow (to the
brain? or retina?) will generate spots before your eyes".
