Hi, I am contemplating buying the BA084 Freelander 1 silencer/fuel tank guard as I have made a reasonably decent metal sump plate for the front end and it occurs to me that I am going to lose the back box off the back end soon. I have tried to find threads about this but can't! Can anyone point in the right direction about best options around this? Thanks alot

Just fit a smaller rear silencer. It'll give you more clearance at the rear, not less. ;)

I have this on mine.

I wondered if the guard I saw would lose ground clearance to be honest. But I am afraid I am restricted by funds also

something like this maybe? I first made a cardboard mock-up to check for clearances...It's made of 6mm checker plate and I cut it out myself using a circular saw and an angle grinder then had it bent up by a local engineering shop.

Yes something exactly like that how much for the bash plate? I want to buy your exhaust protection haha
Seriously, though; is that your own work and if so, what sort of plate you got on that? Looks groovy

sorry, for some reason your build description did not show before I asked the questions you had already answered! Yes, I see how you did it. I made my sump plate with checker plate and it has been really good for my needs. Jigsaw was really good to cut with, I was amazed not being much of a metal worker.Do you recall what size checker plate you started with at all? Thanks a lot, big help.

I just had a look at my silencer and I have another question. Does the silencer not hit the guard there at all or did you have to do anything to stop that? If you see what I mean? Thanks Harvey. And I liked your film too very funny I thought. Especially being a recovering alcoholic myself haha

I began with a sheet of corrugated card board. I made up the design with that but left extra space for bolt holes... I scored a sheet of 6mm plate from a scrap yard for about £15. I marked it out using the card mock-up as a template and also marked in the field lines. I used my circular saw with a fine TC blade [ used ear & eye protection here] and cut our the flat shape. Smother off the edges with the angle grinder... I used carpenters angle tool to copy the angles and went to an engineering place to put the bends in. That cost about £25.
At home again I marked out the drain / vent holes and used a hole saw to cut them out - that was a slow part, totally stuffed my drill! Grovelled under the car and trial fitted it carefully marking the forward bolt holes. The side ones are the trailing sus' link and the centre one is a hole in that rear subframe assembly. I tapped a thread and used a countersunk allen key bolt. The rear bolts were marked and drilled into the bottom of the t'bar. Again I tapped the holes...

The design is plain and easy to make. There are only four bends and two of those are short R angles. I've seen others and they've managed to get a nice curve on the bottom surface to match the muffler. The engineers can do that too it's just a series of gentler bends across that surface - very nice! Some have put one crease across the bottom in the middleto give it a flattened V profile. Clearances are fine in my set-up.

Thanks that is good looking but you may be right about the price. I think the slim silencer mentioned here and by Nodge I think earlier is a good idea though to increase the clearance with a guard. I think I shall make a guard myself because I need to stress myself out manufacturing something really out of my skill set and then making my wife, children and grandchildren look at it even though they do not care at all what crazy grandad has done now to his car. I would make my friends look too but I don't have any haha

I can vouch for the Diesel Do silencers. I have one fitted and it looks the bollocks :)
Are the Diesel Do silencers on that link you sent? I am going to look into this seriously. Also; going to AC/DC tribute tonight. Motörhead tribute is there in a couple of weeks too. Although bit loud for me these days haha old

The silencer is on the link nodge68 posted. Been listening to Joe bonamassa, Muddy Wolf at Red Rocks DVD. Wish my missus liked it loud but unfortunately not. Enjoy yourself tonight mate.

Linked Muddy Mods again.
My musical taste has changed over the years. I used to love Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. While I'll still listen to there music occasionally. I find I prefer electronic stuff from Public Service Broadcasting more appealing these days.

If I want to listen to music the isn't to the wife's taste. I listen to it in the my Freelander on my daily commute. Ok the sound isn't as good as my HiFi system. But the audio system in the FL doesn't do the music an injustice either.

Going off piste. My daily commute is on London underground everyday hence low millage. Going to see Dr Feelgood in 2 weeks and Max Richter at Blenheim palace in June. Can't wait for both.
