So I tried confused.com to get an idea of the kind of price its going to be to insure me, and first I'm surprised at the range - from around 300 to 1500. Yikes. Are insurers so bad at assessing my risk that they differ by a factor of five?

And then I try Sureterm, as mentioned by someone in another thread here. And after repeating most of my details again and listening to a minute of Abba on hold... he say 'yes'! £287 with only a £100 excess. Woohoo. Switch card in hand I prepare to read the magic numbers.

And then he says 'oh, sorry, i mean no'. Seems the insurer offering that deal (Sureterm is just a broker) insist I have access to (and insurance on) another car, and that I've had my license for a year. Otherwise the best they can do is about £400.

The funny thing is that after quoting the £287 figure he said 'thats a really good deal you could waste all week on the phone and not get better than that'. Yeah, and I could waste a morning on the phone and not get it too.. Ho hum, he tried, he really tried, poor call centre guy...

Any other ideas?

buy a LRO there are loads of people doing insurance in there....

And then another friend of mine says 'Don't believe those ads in the Landy mags that say they can do cheap specialist land rover cover'. I don't know who to believe

There was an article in LRM about a 17 year old kid who seems to have built his own souped-up off-roader Landy from scratch. I wonder how much his insurance is... "Age?" 17. "Years with license?" Half. "Does your vehicle have any modifications?". Its one big modification. "Will you be wanting cover for off-road use?". Yes, and it'll be upside down or hanging on a winch rope half the time. "One moment please while I put you on hold".

He'll be through an entire Abba album on hold before they sort him out :)

Kingell that a lot
My 2a with Sureterm "Fully comp, limited milage 5k, second car" = £90

I suppose if I'd passed my driving test 20 years ago and not waited this long then I reckon I wouldn't be paying that much. There can't be much data on new Landy-driving 40-year olds (the midlife-crisis vehicle of choice being a slightly more sporty number, I imagine) so I was expecting a bit more than 90 quid, maybe up to 400. Anything below 350 I shall look closely at.

Just have to keep my nose clean for a couple of years and it should come down.

And it will depend where you live, try Lancaster they recently reduced my yearly bill by two thirds although that was mostly due to be just letting Direct Line auto renew my insurance for years without checking.

Make sure you dont tell them over estimated vehicle value, and if anything under-estimate how many miles you will do, if you have a garage tell them it's kept in it (even if its full of junk) - don't suppose you could tag onto parents insurance?

I already live in Lancaster...

Oh, you mean the insurance company :)

Yeah, they came up pretty high on dazed-and-confused.com (oh no, thats a Led Zeppelin track), so I shall try calling to see if they can do better...

I think I can just squeeze a SWB Landy into my back yard so I can tell them its kept off-road, although its probably safer out front than out the back where feral children run wild.

Through the AA, for a series III pick-up, named driver only £140, if i added the wife's name it drops to £92.......and she's the one with points on the licence!!!

Confucious.com (no hang on thats the chinese philosopher) confused.com lists the AA as 'Unable to quote for more than 5 seats' - spose thats okay for your pickup but not for my 6-seater station wagon

I suppose I'll have to try and find a wife with some points on her license, but I think she'll end up costing more than the saving in insurance :p

footman james are good esure quoted me 3000 to 4000 pounds to insure third party as im only just 17!!

So esure are saying they think you're going to cause over 3000 pounds worth of damage to other people's cars in your first year of motoring!

If I paid that much for 3rd party insurance I'd be driving like a dodgem car just to get my money's worth...

it's darn easy to do 3 graands worth of damage, someone rolled into the back of our mazda 6 at about 20mph ish, visually all that looked wrong was a split rear bumpery thingy - musta been plenty else as the bill was just over 3K all in, but seeing as it was an insurance/main mazda dealer repair i expect they charged double time for having their cuppa.

Ahhh i understand now
This is your only car and your first?
Sorry to give you a downer but statistics say new drivers Will have a bump in the first couple of years.
Also the kids get hammered because
1 they all thing they are invincible and it wont happen to them.
2 they have NO road experience (trust me once you have written a couple off you have a completely outlook).

Keep your nose clean and bide your time it will come down.

At my age I know thats not true anymore!

Shame my 30 years of bicycling don't count - I've had one smidsy ("Sorry mate I didn't see you") hit me which bent my back wheel, and one broken elbow when falling off cos my front fork broke. That's road experience for you!

Just got a real good online quote from Liverpool Victoria, but I want to talk to a human being first...

It should but it dosent.
I'm assuming you made a clame against the SMIDSY ? if so that may effect you insurance quote now.
Under the question "Have you been involved or made a clame in the last 5 years ....... "

She gave me forty squids for a new back wheel - it was only a bicycle - so I didn't feel the need to get the lawyers involved. Spose I could have had her nicked for careless driving, mental distress (I went flaming mental when she hit me), loss of earnings (had to go get a new wheel the next morning), but this was more than 5 years ago back in the day when we didn't have ambulance chasing lawyers touting for business in the shopping centre.

Friend of mine has a response for them:

A: Excuse me sir, have you had a road accident in the last five years?
B: Not me, but I know someone who got his face smashed in chasing ambulances.
A: Oh really! Ah. I see. Thanks, bye.

i really struggled for insurance for my second S3 (its got a perkins engine), only managed to get four companies to give me a quote and they were all bloody expensive! the cheapest quote was from liverpool victoria. my problem is that i'v only been drivin for 8months..........
