My first landy is a series 3, i use it daily and it has a heater thats pretty good! Must be one of the lucky ones! It's great in town, but i probably just think that because i don't have to slow down, the only things that argue about right of way are the busses! just as well cos the brakes are crap! It can be bumpy but it all ads to the fun, missus starts nagging, i aim at the potholes!! And you can park where you like and no one ever goes near it! Excpt for kids, they seem to love old land rovers, dont get the same reaction as a disco! You can tat wiv em, rivet stuff on and it looks like it's always been there! Ok i'm biased but i've wanted one since i first saw one as a kid! They just have the character lost in a lot of younger cars!

i hope my first car will be a series 3. if i can choose, i would like a station wagon in bronze green. i just love the series 3, and the yellow and red levers:D

Well ive said it before and i'll say it again, thank you everyone. I really have got a my heart set on this and ive managed to persuade me mum to at least keep an open mind, in fact she was bordering on being interested last night:D:D only me dad to work on now (may take more as i may have to ask him to insure it :( and put me on the policy:cool: but i definately aint giving up. Will keep you all posted and thanks for everything oh and keep in touch peeps and Taggy is it an aftermarket heater or something because ive heard they're like worse than useless and is the steering not a concern??
Cheers
Jonathon

Come on Ormus you're just talking site!!!! :) My SIII is my daily runner by choice, it has done 11k miles this year, including a 2k run over the summer and is going to Austria on Saturday. The heater is adequate and the steering always points me in the direction that I want. Do it - get a SIII as your daily runner.

I haven't got a clue about the heater being after market! Wil have a look and see over the wk end let you know! The steering on mine seems fine, you get into the swing of it pretty quick i live in a cul de sac and get it around there pretty well, just needs a couple more shunts back and forth. As long as everything is as tight as should be, its fine, does follow the camber a bit on mud tyres but otherwise get one!!!!! Shouldn't be as bad to insure as a more modern small car the age helps a lot!

I'm with Ashoo' on this.

I missed my III like hell. At one point I was doing about 100 miles a day to & from work which was a bit much, but had I had a more local job I woulda kept her. On long trips that weren't just the daily commute I couldn't stop grinning, every time without fail.

I bought a bloody Irvin jacket as I was told the heaters were crap, wore it once & boiled after 10 miles. No, aircon it ain't, but it did the job.

The 90 I have now IS better for the daily commute (70 miles nowadays, half of which is the M4), but for a local commute / social use I still reckon you get a lot more smiles per mile in a III. & they ARE prettier than a Defender, they just are!

Ashoofaack, Taggy, Marcus ...THANK YOU!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D those are the post i was hoping for and will be showing me dad (persuasion tactics). Me mate's giving me a shed loada stick for this ("land rovers are s*** what dya want onea them for!") but i just dont care. I WANT ONE. Simple as that preferably ASAP thanks again
Cheers

P.S. anyone with landrover world....page 17 Red SIII in the middle of the right hand column, not for now and i know I cant examine the chassis etc but that'll be my price range, what do people thinks??

just cause a few die hards use em as daily cars dont make em a suitable choice.
yes i love the series, but it was an old design in 1984, it certainly is very old now.
i repeat, its a great weekend car.
but for a daily driver, (and similar money)the disco is a far better choice.
(a defender aint cheap enough yet).

its a bit like using a bsa bantam d1, as a daily commute bike. similar technology.

I appreciate that Ormus but Like ive said it will pretty much be a weekend thing as I m still in 6th form and will be for the next yr n a half which is a couple mins walk away so itll only be used at weekends and occasionaly on an evening so is it alright if thats the only use it'll be getting?
Cheers
Jonathon

what are the chances Jonathon, i'm in 1st year of 6th form too, so i'll be looking for a series motor when i learn to drive (in march). insurance for me alone would be steep (£2,650 from sureterm) but if i can get it on my dad's insurance it would be one hell of a lot cheaper :D

Any road up, I know a Disco is a 'better' motor, but it ain't a series.

I ran a chopped '76 shovelhead electraglide & sold a reliable Kwak' (& a lot else besides) to finance the build. Pig it was, but I grinned every time I got on it, however cold it got.

It's the same thing. If we wanted really reliable motors we probably wouldn't buy Land Rover products at all!

Ain't it like that old thing about "if you have to ask, you wouldn't understand"?

exacty, i run a disco as an everyday motor, but im rebuilding a s2, when thats done i will use it fer work on dry warm days, and i will enjoy it more than the disco, but on cold wet days, the disco is still god ;)

Jonathan my son has a diesel s11a and uses it everyday to get to work and then he make trips of 250miles to go testing with Ford each week (away on Sunday night for 3 days testing) . Yes it is not the quickest form of transport but it always gets him to his destination with warmth in the cab (Clayton Dewander heater fitted) and returning 25 to 28mpg. Steering is no problem as long as you are relaxed with the steering wheel, preferably one hand on the straights and don't keep correcting all the time. He is 18 and has payed £539 to Footman James for Classic Car third party insurance. The s11a cost ME £750.00 off eBay and required 2 hours welding and a pair of wheel cylinders for its MOT, tax was nowt with it being a Historic Vehicle. Hope this is some help with your search for a suitable vehicle. Barry

Thanks a million everybody, spoke to me dad this weekend:p he's alrite about this...particularly happy i wont be speeding i think;) he says basically if i can afford it i can do it. Hows this for an ins quot bearing in mind its a 17 yr old male and it'll be parked on the road ...£1523.92. Its pretty much expected. all in all this is going to come to arouind 3K i reckon. DOes anyone know what the SIII 88in sw are tax wise because this is proving a challenge to find out.
Cheers Jonathon
P.S i have a blank post of any SIII owners in the north east dont suppose anyone knows anyone up ere??

Hi mate. i have a series 2a (modified series 3 i think ;-) ...)
There really isnt any point in buying a series unless its tax exempt!
Its about £160 a year for a series 3 i think.

Last i heard u need to be 25 or 30 to get classic insurance,
Im 22 so went on my dads..
Cost £130.... no tax, everything's easy to fix and the parts are cheap as chips!

But if u really want a series 3, i'd go buy a V5 and log book for a pre '73 (tax exempt) one...... Obviously you would do everything by the book ;-)

Carl.
