Ladies/Gents,
Its been getting worse recently, but not when driving from cold, as the motor heats up it progresses until almost a constant rattle is heard.
The kind of grinding-rattle that sounds a lot like 2 gears turning against each other but not quite connecting. Happens in all gears at all speeds, and even when the clutch is in. I've checked gearbox oil, diff oil, engine sump, and the noise seems to come from slightly in front of the gearbox, almost ahead of the bulkhead.
Any ideas greatfully received.
JAT.

seeing as how you didn't include me in yer greeting i won't be suggesting to you that it may be a clutch release bearing nor will i be asking if it increases with engine speed or if it goes away when you depress yer clutch pedal.

Soz Slob,
When we're rattling along dipping the clutch doesn't stop it. But stranglely it does seem to get slightly faster as overall speed builds up, which contradicts statement 1 don't in?
Still think clutch release could be worth looking at?
Many thanks.

one possible idea (im not an expert!!!) - but if the starter motor pinion doesnt return 'home' (if they do at all) it would catch on the flywheel/starting gear thing, i had a similar problem on a volvo - i took the starter off and push started it (you could use a starting handle) and it worked fine! no odd noises at all!
p.s. dont trust me its only and idea
p.p.s. if it does work then i know exactly what im saying and i take all the credit
