Other than astethics Is there any reason why I couldn’t wire front sidelights so they come on when ignition is on. as they are LEDs they would operate as DRLs.

Then they would also come on with the lights.

that being the case I assume I need to feed a switched live to the lights.
 
If you permanently wire up your sidelights, would this also illuminate your rear lights and dash. don't know if that would be a problem.
You wouldn't be able to switch your sidelights on with the ignition off, or if you could, they would also turn the ignition on, unless you used some sort of voltage sensing wizardry.
 
You could easily wire up a buzzer to your light circuit with a normally closed relay. Take power from your lights, thru the relay to a buzzer, using power from the switched live to open the relay so it only sounds when the ignition is off
You'll never forget you left your lights on
 
Or you could do something similar with a spare ignition coil connected to the door handle! You'd soon learn to turn the lights off before opening :p
