Hello,
As per the “armrests”, those may be assessed that we are talking about the center armrest which we can never go down such low to rest our arms while driving…In my opinion, it’s so weird that a 2001 MY Freelander has no armrests nearside the front seats, as well as no cup holders provided for all passengers. In my opinion, it’s not a good idea to design hollows into the glove boxes’ lids for a hot coffee pot in terms of driving safety at least…

Cup holders will be a different modification issue with the 2004 center console, especially for a 7” double din head unit installment purpose; if I do not give up this mod to solve that easily by replacing with an in dash (pop out screen) head unit…

For ease of driving comfort; I have been thinking to attach two armrests to the front seat backrest sides as to be installed each one for right and left backrests individually. I have been reviewing the RAVE documents for a while to see the squab frame in details, while I am waiting for the armrest from Ebay…Armrests had been removed from a van in the States and delivered with the hardware including bolts and pivots. Now, I am ready to do this in any way necessary on this weekend in my garage.

At this point, I have some questions related to the retrofit. Any help and additional ideas would be greatly appreciated…

· Could it be done without removing squab cover and pad, if I use 2 each self-tapping screws as a center screw and a pivot screw instead of provided original bolts and pivots?

· Since I do not want to remove cover and pad, can I use one of the lumbar support bolt holes as an alternative to attach armrests and, can I do this making a 4cm diameter hole on the leather?

· How can I find the correct frame point gropingly to screw in a correct point?

Thanks from now…

I have a '99 without cup holders. I have a 01 car with cup holders - they replace the rubber nick-nack holder on the top in the middle of the dash. So I took them off and installed in my car - basically the same as a 04 facelift. But I didn't keep them for long, never use them - so put the rubber thingie back in.

As for your armrest. I think you will be better off making a frame for them to bolt to and anchoring with the bolts that bolt the seat to the chassis, or possibly the bolts used for the plastic cover between the seats. They won't move with the seats, but you can install them where's good for your and will be stronger - I'm not convinced you can cobble something up with a couple of self tappers on the frame that will be strong enough. That is unless there are some mounts in the frame that were put there in case arm rests were to be used at some point.

If you are to put them on the frame - I would suggest you get a seat from a breakers that you can dismantle and test with without trashing your seats.

Thanks GrumpyGel. I can try a frame moving with the seat.
As per the cup holder, I'd better check Ebay for a replacement of the rubber thing...

There is a ready made central arm rest available. Mine was via Britpart. It slots over the existing central box and slides forward when required. It should be screwed on, however, the fit is tight enough to negate that need.

Can you put a link up for it plese?

As for an armrest I have adapted Vauxhall Vectra C armrest. Fair amount of work but final effect is good. It is posted in "what have you done to Your freelander today" thread. I will try to find it and repost the link. Matches good and slides forward. I have also found original armrest to low but could not justify 80 odd quid to spend on it. £5 and couple of hours work and fits like a glove.

I was just about to mention some idiot put VAUXHALL  parts in his Freelander but then Lukas admitted to his sacrilege.

Looks good though. :p

Well 80 for new one is a bit harsh so scrappy trip and some change. Had to find one without vents. Just with wee cubby hole.
