my old disco 1 300dti has had its gears go.the old thing is auto and I am told that the transfer box is to blame.one minute I am driving and the next there is a nasty clunk type sound and all of a sudden tgher is no drive what so ever.go through the range from park to low drive and back again there is nothing.if anyone has any thoughts on the subject I would be most grateful.thanks in advance.

If the transfer box is slipping out of gear, the autobox can be working perfectly, and you won't have any drive.

Are you sure the transfer box is positively engaged in either high or low range?

the transfer box is engaged as best that I can get it.trying to get it in and out of high and low range is a bit of a struggle as it is so tight to move the lever up and down.but like I say one minute you are driving quite happily and the next ....nothing literally.
 
As @Turboman says, check the transferbox is engaging in both high and low range by pushing the short lever fully forwards through the neutral position to the low ratio and trying it again.

You don't mention the age of your motor but it "should" have a cross drilled input gear, if it doesn't then it is possible that the auto box output shaft splines have worn and now do not drive the input gear, but this would be very tell tale as it makes a bit of a racket as the shaft spins in the gear, but it is worth a check.

The lever shouldn't be hard to move, have you been using it regularly?
Try with the main box in neutral, or when the vehicle is moving very slowly.

The linkage of the small stick can also cause problems, might be worth having a look at it, checking it is lubricated, and not fouling on anything which will prevent it going fully into gear.

as I said the lever is so stiff you really have to give it some to move it.i do not use it as I have no reason to do so as yet.the car itself is 1995 discovery series 1 2.5tdi 300.it will move up and down but you need some strength.it is so stiff.but when I have moved it I have made sure that it has gone back to where it was to start with.at the moment it is up on my mates ramp in bits.i.e...transfer box on its way out of the car.what he will find god only knows.it was the clunk type noise that got me going just before everything gave up.

But you should use low range. Use it for parking, mounting kerbs, reversing when towing, if you do.

Not using it is what has caused your problem. The linkage has got stiff through lack of use, the stick has got accidentally moved a bit, and now you aren't going cleanly into either range, so you have no drive.

thank you for putting me straight.i am still a bit new to all this,so if I make a boo boo then my apologies.hopefully later today I will learn the fate of my old banger.as and when I do I will let you all know.thanks once again for all your thoughts on the subject.

I get my old banger back today.turns out the high/low shifter was not quite engageing.took a lot of messing about to get it back to where it should be,it has had done to it what can be done but it is probably best left alone.so thanks to all for their input and lets hope I can get away with trouble free motoring.
