When turning right on full lock at low speed i hear a groan from the right hand side. I got my daughter to rock the steering wheel back and forth and there is this slight knock. Is this just normal backlash?

No, there should not be knocking. There will be a component on it's way out.

Try getting your daughter to do the same again, with the brakes applied, and hold the various components between your fingers to try and find it. Also examine the swivel joints, and the suspension bushes while you do this.

I have done that and pinching items it seems to be most prominent at the drag link. Perhaps I should change that and check the steering box while its off?

Check the steel sleeved rubber bushes on the ends of the Panhard rod, it's not unusual for the securing bolts that pass through the rod ends that secure the top to the chassis and the bottom end to the front axle to loose their "pinch" on the steel bush within the rubber, the bush and bolt wear upon each other. Each movement of the steering wheel tries to push the front axle assembly side to side, just a slight bit of wear between the bolt and bush gives a "clunk, clunk", don't ask how I know.
