This is how my MAF sensor looks like...
is this normal, its basically full of ****. Its happend as the filter was ****ed and allowing air to bypass it
i have replaced the air filter and also orderd a new MAF as i coulnt get a reading between pins 2-3 using a multimeter
1-3 read ok
1-2 was ok.
2-3 no reading

Could the ****e thats been going through the filter be causing me the suspected "over boosting" issue im having?
ive changed the wastegate solenoid, and the wastegate acutator seems free, hard to move but does move.
 
Dont know about that, but I would surmise that the MAF unit being full of ****e would stop it working correctly, and that looks quite blocked. Have you got a nanocom or hawkeye to read the values , would be interesting to see the difference from the old one to the new one which you have ordered. You can also try disconnecting the electrical plug on the MAF to see if that helps ( at your wn risk, LOL), but give that MAF a clean first.

I havent got a nanocom or hawkeye, looking into get one but undecided which one to go for.

for the cost of a new MAF ive just orderd a new one. Should be with me wednesday.
 
May be worth checking the intercooler and pipes as well, after that debris has gone through the turbo you could have a nice lot of gunk in your intercooler and pipes , also may be worth pulling the MAP sensor as well and giving it a clean.

There has been a lot of discussion on here about the MAF, which one did you order?

ive got one of ebay from JGS 4x4
going to clean the MAP sensor tommorrow
Will check the intercooler pipes also

got a power steering leak also to sort, pretty sure its on the pipes at the front and not the pump
 
FFS ... How often do (or don't) you change your filters?
i bought the car about 8 months ago.....and put it straight into storage. Its been sat on a farm ever since. got it out the other day, drove to the MOT, then from there to my workshop and now im opening her up to all this.
SO...ive changed the filter once..lol.
im going to remove the intercooler and give that a good old check and clean as thats probably full of ****e im guessing
 
Overboost could also potentially be down to a failed/clogged MAP sensor, worth checking that. Has the turbo wastegate arm been tinkered with? Think there should be 12 threads visible (roughly) on the wastegate arm for it to be on standard boost, if there are much less visible then someone has 'wound the arm in' to get more boost....
 
According to RAVE the MAF is mainly for EGR control, but it also lists a lot of symptoms if it does go wrong, not just EGR not working!
The only bit that needs to be clean, as such, is the sensor that you can see on the left of pic 3. everything else is just to help condition the flow to get a better reading.
But lots of crud on the screen in front of the sensor will cause "noisy" readings.
As Bennehboy says, the MAP is the more important sensor.

i know a lot of people say the maf sensor is only for controlling the egr valve, but from my own experience's with 2 td5's, even though the egr are fully removed and disconected, mine run noticably smoother with a properly working maf

Agreed, there's some secret stuff that LR decided to not mention in Rave, it's been proved that even on a vehicle with no EGR the MAF can impact mileage quite significantly... so clearly RAVE doesn't give the whole picture.

I read the figures in live data using hawkeye, with a faulty maf my idle speed error was +50rpm and injector balances were in the+and- mid teens, with new maf fitted idle speed error is +3 and injector balances were +/-2 across all 5 cylinders, and its just so much smoother
 
Yes wouldnt be the first rime Ive heard RAVE is not always correct, Turners dont have a high opinion of it!
Actually the version I got the info from was the latest one I downloaded from a link on here, its the only Ive seen that gives a decent, but not always correct, description of the TD5.
