H Reg Defender 110 200 TDI

226,000 miles on the engine. Had it for two years and it is very reliable (starts first and every time, small puff of white smoke on tsrat then fine, struggles a little uphill when towing). made the mistake of fixing the oil pressure light which now comes on on tickover when warm. Last night rear crank oil seal appears to be leaking. So if I have to take engine out should I look for a Disco lump? Any advice please?? (Anyone got one!)

Does the engine have to come out? When I had my clutch fitted they did the oil seal at the same time.

TBH if the engines good then its possibly better the devil you know. Fix the leak and change the oil sensor and see if it still has problems. you've only spent a few quid that way and its never guaranteed that the replacement engine wont have its own problems.

why change it if its reliable? have a combustion pressure test done, chemical block test, we had a tdi with similar milage that the driver fried the head gasket due to the idiot not noticing the temp rise after he off roaded and got the radiator full of grass, then decided to do the whole engine as you do, and it was still std...!!! some tdi engines just never quits. Does it use much oil?
:)

Nah don't get a new engine, as said check compression. Fix your oil leak (should be quite easy if it's the front crank oil seal..) and youl have a good runner again.

Think he said it's the rear, although it's still only gearbox out, could inspect the clutch at the same time, Stick with it I say.

His other thread suggests front.. As you say, eitherway it's not a difficult fix! If it is front, do the cambelt while your there! If it is rear, clutch.
