Hi guys,

I test drove a 02 Freelander 2.0Td4 Serengeti 5d, the ride was good and I couldn't spot any problems. I'm interested in buying but it has considerably high mileage (122k). Could probably get it for £3500.....it has a FSH and I'm buying from a Ford main dealer (3 months warranty).

Is this a good buy, could you let me know of any problems to look out for?

Any comments would be really appreciated!

Cheers,
Adam.

Have a good search of the forum for all advice & possible problems. If it drives well without any noises & pulls cleanly it should stand a good chance. Some of the folks on here have done mega miles with the TD4 engine & are better qualified to advise, but good regular servicing seems to be the key, oh & replacing that crankcase breather filter & valve assembly regularly (only recently added to the service schedule as blocked ones blow turbos) is critical. Hopefully a few of the more experienced folk will reply to you with more indepth areas to check.

Thanks for the advice, I will be searching the forum for more

So how much does it cost to replace the crankcase breather filter & valve assembly ? Is it something that needs to be done annually or more/less often? Is it something that I could change myself - I don't have much knowledge but Am prepared to get my hands dirty if necessary

I ordered mine from Duckworth through ebay, cost £26. It should be changed at least every 12,000 miles. Get a Haynes manual, rubbish though they are, they do at least roughly show you how to do this job, though don't mention the tools required. You'll need a set of long shank Allen Keys to remove the air filter cover (you can change the filter at the same time) as the two bolts at the bulkhead can't be seen & are a swine to reach otherwise & also a female torx set as they hold down a wiring loom for the injectors. I carefully used a small socket either 5mm or 5.5mm that came with a screwdriver set & it worked but you're better with the right tool as the socket could slip easily & damage the screw. I also had to disconnect a couple of injector return pipes before unbolting & removing the valve/filter unit but this is dead easy. It's not a particularly difficult job, the worst bit is lining up the air filter cover properly when putting it all back together. Allow a couple of hours & take your time, you'll be well capable of doing it.

Cheers mate, I'm going back to the dealership tomorrow to take another look...If I go for the car I will try and persuade them to change it before I buy ;). Thanks for your advice, very much appreciated :D
