Hi all, i wonder if anyone out there can advise me. I want to purchase a 2003 Freelander 1.8 SE. You hear so many scare stories regarding head gaskets and cam belts,c an anyone advise me on this please. Mileage is at 73000. Many thanks in advance. Steve

its a petrol, listen to the bad reviews and storys and steer clear from the petrol models ! :)

look for a diesel like the TD4 - there the best :D

My 1.8 still going strong, well over 100k now, without MLS etc. Prob better off with an oil burner if you are not confident with spaners.
 
If you don't mind the crap on here and your either happy doing the work yourself or paying someone to do it....... Mind you the TD4 has it's own problems!

Every engine has it's problems, some more than others, in the FL the TD4 is by far the most reliable.
 
I got an 03 110k TD4, engine wise it's great, but it does have other issues, I have learnt very quickly that a good set of tools and some balls of steel have saved me 1000's in the garage:)
 
Td4 problems are uaually more ancillary related & not the engine itself which is strong if regularly serviced & doesn't have a cambelt to worry about. Definitely the engine to have.
