Hi All,
I have seen what looks like a really good 4.6 vogue have you got one and what do you think ?
Should I stretch to this newer model
Thank's Fred

No. Unless it's had a full engine rebuild within the last 10k miles, as good old traffic master says "severe delay, avoid"

Have a read up on-line over at rangerovers.net and places like that, the V8's tend to have slipped liner problems requiring either a new block or a rebuild with every cylinder being re-lined preferably with top-hat liners.

Just have a search, there's plenty of info out there.

I had a 1995 4.6 HSE, which I loved. It had 147K on the clock and suffered from a porous block, which was cured for a while with some magic stuff added to the collant system.

Now have a MK3 2002 4.4 HSE, which drives even better!

I would recommend getting a good after market warranty with at least a max of £1000 per claim.

Good luck.

Here we go again with all the "oooh don't buy a 4.6 it'll blow up " crap
Granted, SOME do have a problem but it's not nearly as common place as some may think
Look for a FULL service history and take it on a good long test drive to see if it overheats - if it's ok the temp. guage won't go over half way
What mileage is on it ?
The later Thor engine, which yours will be being X reg was not nearly as bad for giving problems as the earlier ones - Land Rover helped the problem by eliminating engine hot spots which seemed to occur on the rear cylinders when the engine was laboured up long hills - they did this by changing the gear box configuration so it didn't stay locked up in top as the earlier ones did
Who are you buying it from ? - private sale or a garage ?

It's from a small dealer
A Vogue with all the Bells and Whistles. ( 100k )
They have several but this one seems to be the best of the bunch.
Sounds quiet and tickover is smooth. no sign of engine leaks etc.,they left me to play with iit for a while and seats, roof, satnav, air suspension all seem to be oK.
I will ask for a test drive and compare with my Classic.

I have seen others but have been put off by a sort of fluttery click that appers every now and again, any ideas what this could be ?

Thanks for your advice
Fred

Fluttery click is maybe just the air con compressor kicking in/out or the ABS pump
Is the garage offering any sort of warranty over and above the mandatory 3 months ?
Have a long test drive and see what you think ?
At this mileage a full service history is essential

Hi,
I have arranged for a test drive and the dealer has told me he has two other RR a 2001 Holland and Holland and an older HSE with lpg.

I will check them out with a friend.

Cheers

Didn't get a chance for test drive as I became ill.
My friend has kindly taken on the task and he advised against both.

His stories of the may cars he has seen has surprised me.

He has been choosy with his selection and kept his viewing to within 40 miles from home, selectiing carefully by write up , pictures and price ( Not too cheap ) etc.
3 RR's in Hemel all with a great write up were dreadful, 2 failed to start at all with car 1 showing signs of hot water running down the side of the coolant tank nice rim of mayo in tank and under oil filler, oil leak from engine.
Car 2 similar signs to car 1, had got so hot that the dip stick and oil filler cap had siezed solid.
Car 3 started and ran with all lights on the air suspension and error messages on the console.
Others viewed
Some had damage not mentioned in the write up, one had the windscreen cracked in a u shape covering the entire windscreen
The camera does lie because one even had a different number plate than was in the picture.
Most had been around for some time, looking rather sad and unkept, not the pristine cars shown in the pictures.
One car locally sold for over 6000 but when I saw it before I became ill the oil did not reach the dipstick and when it started my wife said oh its a diesel... Whoop's... And the Satnav was just a blur, Eas lazy.
It's a shame about these beautiful cars that seem to stop being cared for around 80,000 miles, and become a bodgit it if goes wrong sort of repair, none have had recent service records, even from local dealers.

So what's the answer...
I would like a newer P38 or should I keep my old Classic which is not in the same class, or should I ask my friend to keep looking?

What would you do?

Fred

I feel very lucky with my P38 after reading that. I did check for a few faults before buying but It was still a bit of a gamble as my heart was in control of my wallet at the time. It starts first time every time. Hot or cold. Temperature never budges from a fraction below half way in town, on motorway or towing. Only EAS problem was a chaffed hose. Oil filler cap clear of any mayo.

Mine is a 1998 4.6 Petrol (No LPG) Limited Edition with 76,000 on the clock when I bought it and I paid £5800. I am not sure if that was a good price, but I was happy. And still am.

Great news Mud Flap

After all his efforts Roger has found me a 4.6 HSE in Silver , My wife and Roger did the deal and if they are pleased with this one then so am I. I will post news as and when I see her and hear the stories of the drive back.

Thank's for reply

Fred

I bought an Oslo blue 4.0 HSE, 2000 "X" reg, 94k miles with FLRSH and zero faults (amazingly) for £4000 a couple of months ago. No LPG, but immaculate inside and out.

Unfortunately, an aquaintance offered £6000 for it a couple of days later so it's gone.

blimey red your pal must have looked at some proper crap mate .
mine is a 97my 4.6 with sequential lpg fitted and i would welcome any inspection on mine , only fault with mine is a scabby ( and its only minor cos am a fussy bugger ) bottom edge on the lower tail gate but, i got a mint one off ebay in the right colour for 40 quid so i`ll change that when the mood takes me .
dont get me wrong it had a few faults when i bought it , but one by one i sorted them and its now a great drive and i wouldn`t have a second thought about jumping in it and driving anywhere in it knowing full well it wil be a trauma free journey .
rick.

He did Rick and if you saw the pictures and write up you would be hard pressed to think they were the same cars.

If they were TV's you have te dealer up for trades description
