Good evening,

Firstly I'm not sure I've posted this in the correct place....but I'm sure you'll all tell me if i haven't.

I've owned my Disco 2 TD5 for 2 months now. I purchased it off a friend and I've known the car for over 4 years. In May it had a new gearbox & torque convertor fitted at the cost of a couple of £k. The gearbox & torque convertor was replaced by a reputable Land Rover specialist in the midlands.

Last week i posted about my Disco TD5 auto having a whining noise, so after some help from guys on here i narrowed it down to the transfer box.

So on Saturday i decided to change to T/Box oil in hope that it was just low on oil....or just needed changing!! When i removed the drain plug the oil was clearly f**ked and had taken on A LOT of water, and less than half a litre of oil came out....the rest was like toffee and stuck inside the T/Box. The oil that did come out contained lots of metal shavings and even 1 bit the size of a pea. So at this point it was clear i needed a new T/Box as the damage was probably beyond repair. So then i decided to fill it back up with oil just to make it last a few more days whilst i could get a new T/box.....NEXT PROBLEM!!!!

After getting about 1.5 ltr's of oil in the T/Box, fresh oil started to drip on my head....but not from the fill plug. To my amazement one of the bolts was missing that holds the gearbox to the T/box and the oil was just coming straight back out!!! To answer this i can only assume the bolt wasn't put back in or wasn't put tightly or without thread lock. So i replaced with a temporary bolt.

Today i fitted the new box and was astonished to find more issue's......

1. 3 of the bolts holding the t/box to gear box were finger tight
2. 1 bolt had been cross threaded
3. This is the best one!!!! One of the bolts used was too long and went into the transfer box and the tip had been smashed off and bent inside the t/box...( this turned out to be the pea sized object i found as mentioned above). This must of made a loud noise when the garage first moved the car after replacing the gearbox.
4. As the bolts were loose it was leaking oil from where the gearbox shaft enters the t/box

I've attached some photo's for you all to see what I'm on about ( hopefully I've attached the pics correctly ). Clearly i won't be using this garage for any future work!

Can you tell who the garage are please :) I live in the midlands do il refrain from taking mine

To conclude the new T/Box is now fitted and my noise is no longer....phew. An expensive mistake that the garage washed their hands of!

no i wouldnt use them again ,we all make mistakes but thats taking the **** ,its not diufficult for a reasonable mechanic to work out were bolts go ,probably got locating dowels missing too which is important with an auto as output shaft is unsupported

I have seen the bolt hitting the gear issue a few times, people don't notice that some of the bolts are shorter  then ignore the noise on road test and hope the customer don't complain.

Disgusting workmanship, I have been in a similar position with one of my other cars. A garage did work to it which resulted in £2.5k of damage to other components so I can sympathise.
If you are not trying to get your money back or costs covered then I would be posting their name for all to see.

Thats pretty disgusting. I would also like to know who they are as i live in the midlands and want to avoid them.

I hope you get your money back or the cost of the new T box.

good luck
