Went out this morning to find a dangler.
I was shocked ...

It is ....
bought Feb 2021, fitted March 2021 put on the road around August 2021
+2" heavy duty
Around 2000 miles of which less than 200 over fields ..
 
I’d read that the top bush ring bit can snap off too with a bit of vigorous off roading
 
Had the same failure on a newish Terrafirma shock - same location too on my D1 :mad: :rolleyes: IIRC it was just out of the two year warranty :mad::mad:

But... it went towing a heavy trailer round a corner - to say that the handling became "interesting" doesn't really do the situation justice - not something I would wish to repeat... strangely :mad::mad:

I replaced all five on the vehicle with BP supergaz, having lost confidence in TF ..

I'm not surprised. A serious accident waiting to happen......like a ticking time bomb! Very scary stuff

It was :eek:. Somewhat unexpected too :mad:. Took a bit of controlling with one leg "unconstrained", so to speak o_O..

I'm only glad I was sufficiently alert to prevent a mess.
 
Not an unusual incident. Series would pull the top eyes from rear shocks if axle straps were missing.
On Coil spring types it is fail of the bottom pin as in pic above that is common, the axle bracket giving way or like what happened on mine back in the summer when the front shock lower pin pulled through the axle bracket because the hole had worn and washers rusted thin.

I also used the BP supergaz on my disco towed a mini digger all over the place for a couple of years
big thumbs up from me. :)

Not doubting you.. :) It was very unusual to me though, as, having driven coil and air sprung LR's over a million miles, I'd never experienced or even heard of such a failure ... and no desire to experience it again either :eek:

Lack of maintenance will cause all sorts of nasty things to happen.. Done a fair bit of series driving too - again never had that issue.. 1st and second synchro letting go ? Oh yes - had that more than once :rolleyes: ..
 
Most of what I have seen is on extreme off roading such as trials, although the one on mine that went the other day was on the road, even some of the roads around here are pretty rough, not helped by the salty air that blows in from the sea rather often.
 
I contacted Terrafirma (Allmakes) who have asked for a few more pics.
Having concluded Jury Service yesterday, I should be able to get a closer look later on today.

There doesn't appear to be many +2" replacements ... BP SuperGaz or the 'commercial heavy duty Terra's ?
 
Got the shock off today ....
Odd break just where the lower mount exits the shock body ....

ls that a 4-way adjustable standard height Terrafirma rear shock?

lf so l've got two good used spare ones (only had road use)

Actually ignore this, it's got a blue cover and the adjustable ones are red
 
That is where they usually go, a crack starts at one edge and once it reaches about half way across the rest snaps. Have to say yours looks like crack started both sides and it let go when they met in the middle.
 
I am in the process of fitting Terrafirma standard height shocks on my 90 all round. It had BP SG’s on it and the back ones rotted out. I think most things don’t last these days as most modern metals are low carbon cheap crap.
My disco has the original shocks on it and I’m only going to renew the front ones soon as I’m fitting new springs to replace a broken one. 21 years old and still ok.
 
The Terra's I fitted (last March) have really rusted up (see second pic in post #14) where the water/sh*te hits them.
The rest of the shock looks to be in good nick, paint is still shiny and there is no sign of rust or peeling paint other than at the bottom, forward facing end.
The stickers are still on too. The next shocks I fit will have some PPF on them fo sure..
