anyone have any ideas on this?

'96 Disco Tdi, auto, smokes like a B*****d when i start it up! Either hot or cold, have replaced the glow plugs which didn't seem to cure it a lot.
replaced the air filter with no visible difference.
Could it be Injectors????? or the pump?????

Hi KaOs,
It's black, and it only smokes briefly, but it smokes a bit when labouring up hill
towing the trailer or caravan.

Hi

Could be a few things!

Have you got rid of your EGR valve? Turbo pipes that are knacked, blocked intercooler.

Black smoke is usualy over fueling!

 As an old truck driver and NOT a mechanic, black smoke can be overfueling, so as it smokes on start up, what about injectors not closing off fully, and dribbling fuel into cylinder. On start up, black smoke. Perhaps someone will give you a definative answer.

Once had an old Diesel Golf that smoked like a bastood, at the time every bod seid, injectors, injectors & injectors so after spending about £20 on injector cleaner to no avail I bit the bullet and changed all four injectors.
No change still smoked so in anger (not to be recomended) I got a screw driver to the injection pump:eek: Few turns on the first screw I found, job done, never smoked again:) :) :)

The EGR valve is gone and blanked off, but would the pipes and/or blocked intercooler cause the black smoke on start-up?

Normaly a Tdi will start no probs from cold with out glow plugs because they are direct injection even at -5 which I know is'nt the case here!

What is important is to have a good battery with a diesel as if they dont start on the first crank all the diesel that has been pumped in over 3 or 4 cranks will be burned off on start up causing "Black smoke".

Try driving it (when warm) in 3rd or 4th at 3000rpm for at least 3 or 4 miles to give it a good clean out as we have had diesels that have nearly died on us (smoke, slugish etc.....) due to the "School run" and once they have had a good blasting out have been fine again until the next time!

If that dunt work need more info:)
