ok so a friend of mine has managed to shear a rocker bolt by over tightening it, all the threaded part of the bolt is in the head and there's nothing to grip onto the get it out, anyone have and tips/methods for getting the last bit of bolt out??

i'm thinking down the lines of carefully drilling most of it away then trying to re-tap the hole..... well my friend is thinking that....... :D
 
You need some stud extractors. Basically you drill a hole in the middle of the broken bolt then the extractor has a left hand thread like a big self tapper which you screw in and as you tighten it it will unscrew the broken bit. Shouldn't cost you much for a set.
 
Dont snap the stud extractor caus they are even harder to drill out.

The other method is to weld a head on to it if there is enough sticking out
 
The threaded ones aren't all that good apparently. I've got a set of extractors that are a tapered square profile & they're brilliant. Should be able to get them from any good tool shop, mine were about 20 notes, but well worth it.

Cheap uns are crap. If you can't justify expensive ones as a bodge you can use the tang of a file, but don't blame me if you end up loosing your eyesight or blowing the universe up or summat.

I did that once, took it to the local machine shop, job done in about 10 mins, it would have taken me longer than that to find a drill bit

Soooooooo, I'm guessing that the machine shop is four minutes away & the job took one minute, your drill bits are difficult to get at & thing with the sheared bolt in it was marginally smaller and more portable than an engine..........fixed into a fairly immobile non running Land Rover? In which case, what exactly IS your suggestion in relation to this fred? :rolleyes:
 
dint be so ham fisted in the first place then you wint break the fookers but if you do have to play at being arnie then drill and tap it, cos it easier than trying to get a busted stud extracter oot
 
would try drilling a small hole to try and get one of the smaller extractors in. Then if you f*ck it up, you've still got room to drill and tap the fu*ker
 
Let's hope the broken stud isn't jammed on the bottom of the hole.

If it isn't then there's NOTHING stopping it from turning, and if your friend is VERY careful, and if your friend has a 4 ounce pin hammer and some tiny sharp chisels, your friend may me able to tap the stud round and get it out.

I (I mean a friend of mine ...) have broken lots of studs in my ( I mean my friend's) time, and most of them have been taken out this way.

But CAREFULLY .....

Another good wheeze is a impact driver. Drill the stud through.
Get an impact driver and grind an old tool for it to a long-ish tapered spike with 3 sides, that will engage the hole in the stud. Set impact driver to UNSCREW direction, and tap gently while helping impact driver round.
