Evening all, just after some advice. I have just had an offer accepted on a nice looking 1990 90 on a well known auction site... The only problem is the car has been fitted with a 300 tdi disco engine at some point in its life, but (you knew that was coming!) the previous owner has no history on the engine swap and the v5 hasn't been amended, so should I run a mile!

Now I know the dvla aren't the easiest people to deal with so what is the likelihood of me getting my fingers burnt? Any advice most appreciated.

Ps if anyone has a nice 90 in the SW please get I touch. Cheers

Should be ok as long as the insurance company are notified ... you should check this out before bidding though really!

All fair points and to be honest yes in hindsight a little more research should have been carried out, but in my defence if someone states "professionally converted" and then can't produce any documentation surely that's a little misleading:confused:

Also aren't we required in this day and age to notify the dvla every time we take a sh&t, I mean alter any part of our cars?

Still very much committed to buying if the car is as described, just wanted some clarity re the engine swap/dvla view point as to be honest their site and the telephone operative I spoke to today are about as much use as a fanny is to a nun:)

Actually they are perfectly easy to deal with regarding these matters, get your new V5 when it arrives, change the engine no. so that it reflects that of which is on the new one in the box provided and everything else stays the same, it's simply an engine no. change in their eyes. They will send back a new V5 no questions asked. I changed from 2.5Petrol to 2.5 Diesel and didn't even change the engine number for years; it never clicked in their minds that it was now a different engine and should have been on a new number.

When you get insurance quotes tell them it's a TDI engine in it - or as I tell them 4cylinder turbo diesel. It's a LR engine, that about all the care about.

Don't know how long ago you did it but things may have changed since.

I sent off an engine change request in August and they sent back a standard letter refusing to change it without written evidence from landrover / the aa / a receipt from the garage who carried out the change. I may have been unlucky but if you search google etc it seems to be more and more common.

DVLA now want documentation but its easy enough, just go to a garage and get them to write a reciept of confirmation the engine swap has been done, accompany this with and photographic evidence and they will do it...

As to original OP's question, if the vehicle looks good enough then there should be no issue, how many 90's have been converted and not got paperwork, I bet theres alot of them!

When I got Scratchy in the spring the V5 said it was blue and still had a TD in it. I sent in the change form, changing the colour to yellow and the new engine number and got the amended V5 back by return. Simples for me!

The only problem you may find is if the engine number is from a stolen car you can soon find yourself in a whole load of ****. Ask the seller for the number and call the dvla to check its not registered to another car

There should not be an engine number on the engine fitted, It should have been removed and stamped with 'reconditioned' (or similar) shouldn't it? I thought this was the case if the engine fitted was not the origional one? Possibly wrong though.
