4.0 litre 1996. Having an argument with siblings how long will it take two people with average mechanical skills and knowledge to remove and replace the engine in my range I say a weekend my sibling is saying up to 8 days.
Who is right or nearest.
Mortally wounded original engine having to replace hence the argument .

At work we can change an engine in a morning. Although we aren't exactly sympathetic to the cnditiconof the vehicles, so we're probably more violent than a home gamer. We use the ol' thumb detector more than we probably should.

But a weekend is easily doable if you have the right kit, maybe a few days longer if you haven't.

If it's your first stripdown .only engine out and engine back. Three days. Preferably with some rest between out and in!. You'll find the big issue is sussing out the small bits. This can really put the brakes on. Also you can't possibly know the way to do stuff or even put it back in the same order it came out unless you take extensive notes. Everything needs bagging and labelling cleaning etc. You'll do it but getting it back together and running took me sometime(weeks)

Also depends if anything needs swapping over like manifolds pump compressor alternator viscous fan etc etc. If the replacement is ready to go with all ancillaries fitted then 2 days should be easily doable with 2 people at a leisurely pace, even 1 day shouldn't be a huge push if there are no hiccups

Depends on tools and equipment and If you've done it before and developed little techniques for the trickier/time consuming parts then really not that long at all. If having assistance be careful with delegation you don't want both of you disconnecting harnesses - this is also the reason it's better to condense into as little time as possible drag it out over a couple of weekends and it's easy to forget what goes where particularly as there's a temptation to get the old one out and then leave it to find time to put the new one in.

Higher level diagnostics kit massively advantageous in troubleshooting say not pushing home the crank sensor connector fully or whatever.

8 days to get rusted bolts out of the ancillaries and get replacements, weekend to change 8 days to get it running!

Rusted bolts are a good point. That's definitely 2 weekends unless you get really lucky.
