hello me guys

I have been keeping on top of servicing of my disco 200tdi my baby. however this month I am gonna do replace all oils in the axles and gearbox and ttransfer box I understand semi setheic oil is best?

also I didn't realise there was a fuel sediment by the tank I checked and it is covered in thick rubbish and I notice one of the pipe coming out is rust I thought it was plastic? best course? leave as it is and just clean the sediment and new seal or complete replace the unit and new fuel pipe? easy to remove and replace? cheers.

hi taffy

just replaced the boot floor on my 300 tdi disco, looked at my sedimenter whilst floor was out!

as you said coated in all sorts of s..t!
after closer inspection found it was corroded and had a 5- 10 mm hole inthe rear wher it bolts to the chassis.

i took mine off and put new fuel line in from tank to just passed the seddimenter.

i must admit my 300 tdi had had a bad starting problem from just after i had her. was trying allsorts to put right, new lift pump, glow plughs and all the usual stuff.
after bypassing the sedimenter and taking it off completely she starts on the button first time! never done that whilst i've owned her.

i had read and spoken to various menbers prior and a few have removed this with no problems. all i was going to do was service twice a year and keep a spare fuel filter at hand just in case.

but i've heard no problems caused due to this and mine is running better than ever

hope this helps

Hi Taffy, I've just done a full oils service on my wifes Tdi 200, so it's fresh in my mind.

I went for the best oils I could afford and having just been out in her this afternoon, I'm delighted. I used Difflock fully synthetic oils, Evo1 in the gearbox and Evo2 in the tranny and axles.

So much quieter and smoother now - I reckon it's really worth it, not cheap but good !!!

If you haven't already got one, get yourself some sort of pump, to get the new stuff in, otherwise you're buggered. Also, before undoing any of the sump plugs, slacken off the filler plugs.

Good luck,
Dave

okay washing liquid and a tube will do?? my tank right leaks i has a look and there was diesel fuild where the fuel sender unit it pipes okay so will it be the seal??? and will flexible air brasied hose be good sub as a fuel pipe line??

Hi Taffy, re the tank leak, I've recently put a new floor in my wifes' Tdi 200 and in the process noticed a SIGNIFICANT leak in the tank area. Turned out to be the metal pipes that come out of the top of the sender unit. I coulddn't work out a cheaper solution so had to fit a new unit, which was about £50 from memory - made sure they were well rust protected after that !!!

Take care to keep all the connecting unions as you will need them for the new one

Re getting the new oil into the gearboxes etc, a 2tr pop bottle with tubing is a good way.

Cheers
Dave

Re the tank leak, as it's at the top fuel pipe unions you might be able to clean and de-grease the unions and then coat them in resin, if that stops the leaking then encapsulating the whole union area is probably worth while, it could save buying a new unit, resin will mean you can't separate the unions but if they are that bad you won't be able to anyway - cost, about £6 for glassfibre resin, polyester resin will do as it's fuel proof.

With regard to the water trap, it's one of LR's hidden treasures, going by the muck it collects I wouldn't want to do away with it but both of ours have been cleaned and made fully operational.

I'm interested in any info. on oils etc. for the next changes on both my 200tdi and my wife's 300tdi auto - we normally carry out servicing every 4000 miles and use genuine LR filters plus quality oils.

Lastly, for the past year I've uses Millers additive to the diesel in my 200tdi and the change has been very noticeable. It takes time to get to work, probably no difference for the first 500 - 600 miles but now fuel consumption has improved and the engine certainly runs better - it's far more responsive than my wife's recently purchased 300tdi so we've started using Millers in that as well.

right okay cheers for the infor about fuel sender unit I better well push the boat out and replace the unit and fuel pipes and filter sediment unit.
