Hi all,

I have just bought a Landrover Freelander XEDI Commerial....so I am a new face to this forum. I have got all the past MOT details but have not had any info from the former keeper about the service details. The Freelander has about 72000 miles and would like to know if the Landrover would be in need for a good service at such a mileage?

Any ideas??

Cheers,

12k minor
24k major
36k minor
48k major
60k minor
72k major and so on. Ring main stealer and local independent, then spend two weeks sitting down trying to work out how there can be such a difference

Freelander? 72,000 miles, still in one bit?
Gotta be some kind of record, pity Norris mcwhirter aint alive he might have been interested in that.
On second thoughts its a freelander.
Im off back upstairs to tratter land

If you've got no history you should get it (major) serviced and get the timing belt done too. Gives you piece of mind and a starting point for future maintenance.

Cheers

Hi Rrrigs,

I have been told from the previous keeper that the timing belt was changed at 45,000 miles and now there are 72,000. Does anybody know if it is time now for a change again??

Cheers again,

Its supposed to be about 3yrs or 36k which ever comes first. Should be due in your next few thousand miles.

So long as the belt looks in good nick. You only ever snap a belt when chucking it down the gears, the belt cant take the centrifugal forces acting on it from the reduction in gearage.

There are nanny state peeps on other forums that change the belt as a matter of course. I have a car with 19k on the clock but is 8years old with the original belts. They a are like new.

Besides there is no date stamped on the belt to confirm its manufacture date. Does this mean that if its hanging on the rack in the shop for 12months that it only has 24months life left in it........I dont think so.

A belt on the shelf is not under any stress, not subjected to dramatic heat changes, oil contamination etc. so it won't deteriorate. An 8 year old belt on fitted to an engine should be changed regardless of mileage.

L series deisel belts should be changed every 48,000 miles or 4 years.

At 72,000 miles with the last belt change at 45,000 then I'd say get it done.

Listen I appreciate the pointers but the car is only out a couple of time a year in the summer. No oil or dust contaminants, car is showroom condition. Its all relative to the usage and it has the automatic tensioner on the belt.

I have an old belt from another service, hoping to send it off to a mate who has a tensional force gauge in their research lab. Would be interesting to see what it breaks at.

All the regular service interval b--locks was to make the money from servicing. Hoover appliances have the same trick, they have a rubber belt that needs replacing
