I'm hoping Someone with a little more experience can help me out.

I'm about to do service on my disco td5 and there seems to be a mixture of opinions on the best filters to get. Do I need genuine LR filters or will premium brand be ok?
I have also heard the centrifugal filter mustn't be a cheapy as they don't spin so well and can cause problems.
Is this correct?

Cracking cheers, I've never had issues with after market stuff on other cars but this is my first LR.

Thats all good saying that you've had no problems etc but the thing is.....how do you know the cheaper rotor filters are actually doing what they're meant to be doing?

How do you know they're not?

It's a daft question really. How do any of us know what is REALLY happening on the inside of our engines.

Change oil and filters regularly and all will be OK. Actually it's far better to change stuff often than to buy the most expensive oil and filters and then leave them in for years.

IMO the LR services intervals were not decided on an engineering basis but much more from the marketing dept. wanting to show potential customers that these vehicles are cheap to service.

Which they are, if you don't buy LR parts :D:D:D:D

you could do what i do and thats cut them open at service times, and experience afterall is the best judge we all have

Cant speak for non LR rotor filters but id like to think LR would have conducted tests to prove that the LR filter works in the LR system?

And companies who make non LR filters would they also conduct tests to ensure that their filter works also in the LR system? (I would like to think so). I read a post on here when I first joined that some non LR filters don't work as effectively?

It seems to me that you have no idea how the car industry works.

1. Rotor filters are not all new to vehicles they had been used for years before the D2 was designed.

2. LR does not design or build rotor filter assemblies or the filters themselves. They give a specification to outside suppliers such as AC Delco et all, who do all the testing etc.

As a result of the above, filter manufacturers around the world have assembly lines where the same filter is fed off the line and put into a Bosch box, a Land Rover box, a BMW or Merc or Ford or Citroen box - if you see what I mean. There is no such thing as an LR filter, it's just a decent filter with an LR stamp on it.

Every days a learning day.

I change my oil and filters every 6000miles, not 12000,its what I prefer to do,and I prefer to buy allmmakes filters:p

No need for what? If every day is not a learning day life would be very tedious.

Yeah that's very true

The reason I didn't know was because In school we did Centimeters and meters, pounds and pence.....no one ever mentioned filters lol :p

And I spent a fair bit on a genuine filter kit :( :( lol

Why would someone have to be an idiot or a moron to vote NO, maybe they just have a different view of the subject?

The word 'traitor' seems to be a word used a lot on Facebook to describe the NO voters over the last few days.

That sounds a bit like 'If you don't agree with me you're a traitor to your country!'

But that's not how democracies work, surely?

So now in Scotland there will be roughly 2 million voters relatively happy with the outcome, especially if Westminster delivers it's promises; whilst 1.6million will be very disappointed.

The whole affair seems to me to have been very divisive to be honest, with an unsatisfactory outcome.

Anyway, back to Land Rovers.....................................

They've already broken their promises and went back on their word about several things......back to Land Rovers

LAND ROVER DEFENDER & DISCOVERY 2 TD5 FULL SERVICE KIT, OIL, AIR & FUEL FILTERS | eBay

Would you buy this?

I forked out a bit more for "genuine" stuff apart for the fuel filter, ive not bought that yet

I think il just go for premium filters it's half the price so il just change them sooner. Ide ideally like to do the spring conversion too but worried il loose the smooth ride.

Allmakes are just another Britpart, rather than an actual manufacturer, so if I want cheapest I go for these:

DA6004 | Filter Kit - Def TD5 and Disco TD5

and if I wanted branded manufacturer filters I buy these:

DA6004P | Filter Kit - TD5 - Premium Brands
