soon after owning my disco it had a full complete service , replacing all the oils and filters , i only do around 3,000 miles a year

in the past i've always replaced oils and filters every year regardless of mileage

was just wondering do u guys also do this or wait for the service interval

can't imagine it does any harm changing everything after just a few thousand miles

aplogises asking a daft question and thks as always

Engine oil and all filters every year, at the same time as the MoT. Gearbox, T-box and both diffs every other year immaterial of mileage. I try to remember to do the prop shaft greasing points about every six months.
The only thing you're likely to damage by changing oils and filters "too soon" is your wallet.

thks, is only around £150 quid for everything , changing all the oil and filters

alas there's no grease points on mine which is a shame

i put money away each week to allow for the servicing costs and mot

got to replace my rear upper wishbones though and also may end up with a pair of front struts

parts , wishbones £200 per pair and struts £400 per pair so not too bad considering it's a heavy motor

Same here. I keep checking for any bargains on the internet and buy service items throughout the year knowing I'll be using them.

Every 5000 miles which is about 6 months for me.
If I did 5000 miles in 2 years I would service it every 2 years.
When I check my oil I pay close attention to the colour viscosity and smell.
I know that the engine oil in my defender is getting past its best at 5k miles, regardless of what my manual says.
Remember though all engines are different

suppose also depends on what kind of driving has been done, i.e. muddy , dusty conditions etc ;)

it's the biggest engine i've owned so far and considerably more complicated , i still haven't counted the amount of sensors, lol

I do more miles than that each year just walking too and fro in my workshop looking for things/tools I just had a moment ago but cannot find now!
Seriously though, with that small mileage each year, provided you are using good quality oil, really the only oil that would be getting contaminated is the engine oil. Tranny and transfer case, diffs, the oil does not get contaminants unless you drive a lot through water and on dusty dirty roads, or tow heavy loads or overheat the auto trans, (which I suspect you do not), you could get away with only doing the engine oil and filter yearly, leave the other oils to changes on a normal mileage basis, whatever LR specifies, I'm not up on later Landies, maybe a only a level check each year for these.
You are just wasting money draining out good clean uncontaminated oil, not to mention wearing out the drain/filler plug threads.
Whilst I was still working heavy vehicle maintenance in mining we had gone over to oil sampling rather than the time/distance based changes, many modern lubricants have extremely long service life before the additives had depleted in the oil, the base oil or synthetics always maintains a high degree of integrity, just the additives "wear out", oils were regularly sampled/analyzed for remaining additives and contamination and only replaced if problems were found.
It had been found they were tossing out a still viable/valuable resource with wholas bolas oil changes, some of the dump truck engines held 200litres, not to mention the transmissions/drivelines, operating costs were reduced by significant amounts without detriment to the equipment.
But it comes down to each Landy owner doing things the way they are comfortable with, me, I like to run synthetic oils in everything, (even my old 300tdi D1), simply because personally I believe it's the best for the job, it has been proven to me that better oil gives better protection, but I am not going to start that old debate again.

Same as above, I give mine a full service oil's and filters just before MOT regardless of mileage.

think another reason for me changing the oils and filter annually is being able to see if anything is untoward within the oils

also got into the habit of checking tyre pressures and engine oil level once a week , good idea ref service just before the mot , as everything can be checked prior , i.e. bulbs

a good few years ago my series failed its mot for a blown number plate bulb ,

hi and many thks for the reply

have noticed in my service book that my gearbox oil is suppose to be lifetime and never need to replace my gearbox oil , i've only checked the level so far

know there are many owners who do the gearbox flushes, costing an average of £3/400 quid , assume that's so u can get the oil out of the torque converter so all the oil is changed

never had one done, on my older jatco gearbox i done two oil changes on it and ran really well

then as always with these gearboxes its then what oil to use, think mines a ZF , know it's a 6 x speed

think oem oil is only to be used , at around £8 per litre

gearbox is running really well and if i'm honest can't warrant that kind of money for a gearbox flush , thinking of replacing the oil next year will be ok , see they also do a sump filter conversion

IMHO, @Gazbo 's comments about oil sampling are spot on - if it was economic for me, I'd do it on everything here.

I change all engine oils annually - not because the oil needs changing, but because it absorbs water, and water is a crap lubricant in an engine. Diff / gearbox etc, I do based on mileage.

An oil change is the cheapest maintenance you will ever do!

As for LR's comment that the oil in an auto is "fitted for life" - I would suggest what they mean is "fitted to limit the life so we get to sell you a new one" - might be worth asking ZF technical what they think of LR's "statement"

Yes that's a very good point, but this will all be evident in oil condition anyway.

"Lubricated for life". I've seen that so many times, but nobody ever tells you how long that life is and when it fails all they say is, "Well, it's come to the end of its life".
Helpful or what?

Yep, helpful to the bean counters!! :D

is pretty useless, lol

from what i've read on forums etc a lot of people stick with the recommended ZF atf fluid , will do an oil change next year , drain a bit out first to see what the oil is like , will keep it topped up for now

is good fun getting it between 35-40c first then taking the level with the engine running, lol,

would have been nice if land rover had designed a simple dip stick system for the gearboxes to save getting underneath and removing panels etc

will get in touch with zf to see what they say
