Took my S3 88" to 4x4 Without A Club in Hampshire this afternoon to see what it is really like in fairly extreme off road conditions.

To say I was staggared is an understatement!!! There was a great collection of 4x4's there from lifted Disco's through Bobtail Rangies, all sorts of Defenders etc.

Good old GRR followed significantly more expensive & fettled kit through some bloody gruelling terrain - we had the bonnet underwater many times, were ploughing through mud that was up to the bottom of the doors & going up, down & across some incredibly steep rises. The only time we needed a tow was when I ran out of talent trying to get up a virtually verticle wall of mud.

I spent most of the day chuckling to myself that £1,000 worth of 26 year old tractor was showing the way to some much, much more expensive kit!!

I just need to find someone tomorrow to braize a rad hose back on, as my pre-event checks yesterday evening resulted in me snapping the leader pipe to the radiator reservoir, thus requiring a temporary patch which is bubbling a little

All in all, a cracking day & I am amazed at the ability of the Landy

gotta agree with you, was out again in my '64 and, again, out performed some other, a lot more expensive landies (though very embarrassed to say the Fronteria probably showed us all up a bit :( )
My only problem i find is i sometimes run out of ground clearance before other landies.

Now there would be a good applcation for a set of headlight wipers, instead of some 30k volvo where the owner cries when a mucky leaf lands on it.

I have to say I'm well impressed with the abilities of my 109. It'll go places in 2wd that my old disco used to struggle with. Different story on the road mind.

Yeah they are pretty awesome :)

Again, groud clearance of the standard series where I find myself with issues (added by the fact I have a SWB with LWB leafs). I found out yesterday that my S2a is better down the lanes with taller AT tyres then it is with standard size MT tyres.

They're amazing machines.

43 years ago my Dad was travelling in convoy through the jungles of central America. The other 4wd, an american international was continually having to be pulled out by the Land Rover. The Land Rover never once missed a beat and at the end The International was pretty much a wreck.

Seems like even today, as they did back then they can still give Much more advanced machines a run for their money.:D

I recovered a defender twice yesterday, very satisfying when old recovers new :)
