Can anyone help? We have a series III 1972 diesel two and a quarter engine & the starter motor has begun to play up. On close inspection, there are only 9 teeth on the pinion, we have a feeling there should be 10? The ring gear teeth on the fly wheel is badly chewed - has some genius fitted a defender starter motor?

im having problems with mine to. Trying to get the thing of my series 2a without taking everything else off aswell. Does anyone know a good company that would refurbish it for me??

I think the point of your question has been missed by everyone.

Surely it would be clear to even the most vision impared if a tooth was missing.

I am assuming your question is, has someone done a swap with a starter from another model?

I think more info will be needed, like some numbers off the starter??

It's two nuts that hold it on - nothing else apart from the wires that go to it need to come off . Starter motors are between £50 and £80 for the Series last time I looked - not sure that someone could refurbish it for much less? You can buy all the bushings and things for them if you fancy doing it yourself.

Its only two nuts if it's petrol, diesels had 3. On the Ser II it was a physically bigger starter and is a right pig to get off without dropping the exhaust. Ser III starers should fit, in fact i think anything (deist) up to the Tdi will fit.

Fair enough didn't realise it was different for Diesel. I have to admit, it was a bit of kiggery pokery trying to get the thing out. As usual with Land Rovers, being triple jointed would greatly help!

Hi
Sorry its been so long, thanks for all the suggestions! It was the wrong motor, but not anymore! Have done a lot of work on her now, plugged most of the leaks & painted her purple :biggrin1:
