I've got a 1981 Series III Diesel. It jumps out of 1st & 2nd gear when it is not under load. What is the easiest fix? Is it best just to find another box and put that in or is a repair fairly straightforward. Excuse me, but gearboxes to me are Witchcraft.

Gearboxes are SO simple!
They are easy to understand, but sometimes a bummer to take to bits.

Treat a gearbox as a challenge. Get an old one and take it to bits!

A word of caution on the new gearboxes, the new parts are not made by the same folk as made the old ones... If you have an old box with a few peices that need replacing, replace them. The recon boxes have parts made in India that are "cause for concern"...

Having looked at the Bible. I had a thought of buying another Gearbox, rebuilding it, then fitting that one, rather than trying to fix the one I've got in situ. If I do start on the one that's in there and cock it up, I'm stuffed. Least this way I've only got to swap it when I'm ready.

Think your plan to re-con another 1 and then swap out is a good1, i face the same issue and thats my plan, its a 1st 4 me 2. I kept a dead siii for 10 years knowing 1 day i would want bits, got a sII 2 months ago(with a series III box) n all that shifting the old LRO around seems worth it now, it also jumped out of 2nd before it died,

Post any hard earned leasons you learn, wish i could fit an auto but i have a Daihatsu 2.8 lump in it, n dont think there is a conversion available, love the motor tho,
