Found this for sale. It says 1948 defender convertible, either they don't know what they have, or don't want us to know, or just choosing keys words to make it come up on a search. But,

Does anyone know what it is? A series I? Doesn't look quite right to me. Not having experience of anything older than a series III, I can't make it fit any photos I've found.

Temped to take a look, but worried it's been cobbled together from other models.

Ideas?

It is a series 1 with the forestry package, less the appropriate tyres

Doors aren't series 1, pedals aren't series 1 (they went through the floor), bulkhead looks like a lightweight bulkhead but missing the detachable vent panel (might also explain why there's no angle to the screen?!), front wings look like they're moded lightweight ones, the sill panels are the 4" deep series 2 ones.

Looks like a bitsa to me!

my guess would have been some form of lightweight for the body anyway, hard to tell from those pics if it is an 80 inch chassis which a 1948 would be iirc but it does look kinda short

Going rate out here for a Landy is ridiculous. It's crazy.

For some reason though series iii's are everywhere. There is an island towards the south that is literally over flowing with old landys.


One day I will remember the camera.

Second hand 110 from 15 years ago go for around £20,000.

Close match! still reckon theres a lot of donors to this one though, but its looks well smart!
Extra high wheel arch could be forestry commission vehicle as stated in earlier post.
Looks really clean, rebuild? that would make sense of the donors

it's definitely not a forestry commision model

in my opinion it's a bitsa, the wheelbase does look rather stumpy but to get any true idea of what is actually underneath we need a few chassis pictures

the tub could be a genuine factory build even though it looks very odd as the Aussies used to do factory mods to thier tubs for the military

it's got the wrong steering wheel and column for the year (about 20 years younger) along with the pendant pedals from a lot later Series

possibly modified lightweight/airportable wings (or homemade items)

it's the wrong instrument panel with larger later clocks

i'm tempted to think it's a much modified later bulkhead, the bonnet looks like it's probably hanging off S3 hinges

yes it's a very tidy looking motor but i doubt there's anything 1948 about it, i certainly wouldn't be spending 8K on it
