does anyone know what engines will fit a 1972 series 3 diesel without needing to change the gearbox, clutch etc or if i go down the tdi route is it easier to get an engine and 5 speed box together and drop them in i use the landy daily on the road but not avert to a bit of green laning

Petrol 2.25 and 2.5 (think the v8 needs mucking about with the bell housing - dr.evil is the man to ask.....actually may be ask someone who is able to get one running)

Diesel 2.25, 2.5na, 2.5 turbo and 200 tdi. Putting in 5 speed means welding mounts and stuff so it's not just drop in.

Oi less of the non running………

V8 wise you need new mounts, adaptor ring for gearbox, SD1 flywheel, skim clutch to fit depending and pressure plate

Then you need to either turn the series input shaft down, open up the V8 spigot bush to 7/8" or chop a bit off the end of the crank and fit a series one…….I'm opting for drilling the bush wider as they're only £0.83

cheers everybody 2.5td or 200tdi ,look like the easiest options ,only problem is getting from cornwall to derbyshire to pick up a 2.5td from my brother, methinks the weight of that in my 106 van could be the deathnail for it lol , or hang on for a 200tdi my mate is breaking(he wants the axles for his vitara )why he just dont buy a landy i dont know but thanks again

2.5td will require the drivers side engine mount moving on the chassis as the injector pump gets in the way, defender 200tdi has the same problem

disco 200tdi is just about the simplest engine swap you could want to do, i've done two and am on my third now, no special tools required and all the fitting instructions you could want plastered all over the web

Sorry to butt in, I've been toying with getting s2 the one I have seen has a defender 2.5 petrol in it, will a disco box and tranny box fit without major work, and would it make the car much more drivable.

L77 and R380 are longer than a series box and you'll have to modify gearbox tunnel and seat box. Not sure about props, think something fits off of something but can't remember what

forget attempting to put a Disco gearbox into a Series chassis unless you want the gearstick to come up under your elbow, the bellhousing is massively longer
