Hi all,

I have a 1980 Series 3 and would like a winch for it. Can anyone recommend a relatively cheap one that will pull the weight of the vehicle and that is easy to fit?

Paddocks do a few but they aren't designed for series 3's?

Thanks
Ian

Any electric winch will fit it's the bumper that'svehicle specific you need to find a winch bumper for a series landy or buy a defender winch bumper and get it modded to fit.

Cheers for the info

Will look for a series winch bumper then - can't say i've seen any though! I only want a cheap winch (like the Brit part ones in Paddocks?) assuming it can do the job of pulling me out if necessary

i've got a series winch bumper that i bought a while ago but it wont fit my hybrid. its a galvanized one. if your interested i ll take a pic of it and stick it on here. u can have it for what i paid for it.

if you want a winch that looks all fancy and shiny of your vehicle buy one of those unreliable leccy ones - it'll also increase the chances of the vehicle getting stolen

if you want a winch that'll allways work and which doesnt need installing get a trifor

Many years ago I had a 109" with an electric winch on I guess I was wired in right cos it never had any power, so I swapped it for a pto driven winch which I never had any problems with (as long as the engine as running).

Or one of those cheap boat whinch's,

One of those has pulled my disco out of some tricky places, all be it slowly :D

why not go for the traditional look and fit a fairey capstan winch, fits to crankshaft no problem with batteries going flat

I've got a complete fairey capstand winch. Its complete with the drive shaft, and will fit on the standard bumper. pm me if you're interested.

Cheers,

Cheers for the info everyone...

The Fairey capstand one sounds interesting but i'm not sure what one looks like. Any pics?

Where are you based?

Cheers

I haven't got any pictures handy at the moment, but i found one the same on the web: New Page 1

Its labelled as "capstan" - about half way down the page. I've got the complete unit uncluding mounting plate, UJs, shafts, brackets, fairlead.

If it looks like what you want let me know and I'll do some pictures and post them at the weekend.

I'm based in Horsham - near Gatwick.

Cheers.

Hello all,
I am aware this is a very old thread but I am looking for exactly the same but it seems it is getting a bit difficult to find. Would anyone know where I could find any ?
Thank you !!!!

To impress the neighbours get an electric winch, even the cheapies are decent enough, bit bling on a series.

To impress other land rover owners who think big ropes are useful, get a capstan winch, rope must be wrapped around the bumper and you must attend all the military shows you can.

To really impress other land rover owners get a pto winch, without a shadow of a doubt the ultimate winch.

But in reality all are heavy and weight you do not need to haul around, so as suggested at least twice get a second hand Tirfor winch.

I’ve had a Superwinch Talon 9.5 on my 1971 Series 3 for a few years now. It’s relatively fast, has a good pull and always works perfectly - unlike the previous Britpart one which caught fire when clearing fallen tree branches….

It was easy to install on a welded up mounting plate.
