Hi all,
Looking for a little help, I have just converted my 1979 series 3 swb to a 200tdi with turbo.
The 200tdi is from a discovery 1 and the radiator has seen better days, but the series radiator is in very good nick, and would like to use it but obviously doesn't have an oil cooler can anyone advise a way round this, is there an oil cooler I can use to supplement the series rad?

you can use series rad and have no oil cooler just plug filter head cooler pipe holes

i see no mention of the oilway thermostat there, are you sure this is safe practice ??

do you run a tdi with this modification yourself in exactly the manner you describe ??

I would be a little apprehensive about running a 200tdi engine without an oil cooler especially as I had to remove the viscous fan. i would be quite happy to fit a stand alone oil cooler but wouldnt know what the optimal size would be.
has anyone fitted an oil cooler with series 3 Rad if so which one?

up to you ,but a lot have been for years, but if you want you can use any you want as long as it fits

I've been running 200Di's with no cooler for years and know of quite a few tdi's running with Series rads without problems.

I trimmed about an inch of the dia of the viscous to keep the battery in the original position but run without it all winter anyway

i've no argument about running di's and tdi's with Series rads as i already know a few folks that do

my question was to do with removal of the "oilway" thermostat should you decide to run without an oil cooler (remove or not remove) as from what i'm lead to believe is the thermostat (not studied this myself) controls the direction of flow (unless maybe stuck halfway) when the engine temperature rises, this then directs the oil through the cooler "before" any bearings

this is all as far as i'm lead to believe, i really need to study this for myself and check the official workshop manual should i ever decide that i need to bypass the cooler so that "I" am happy with the modification

i only asked the initial question to clarify the situation for the guy that wasn't necessarily asking "all" the questions he may have needed to, as i consider it would be a proper shame should he fit the engine minus cooler and have it go bang due to missing one small important detail

minimal questions and abrupt answers don't necessarily answer all the risks
