Rebuilt my s3 2.25 diesel at the weekend, engine starts and runs with foot down on throttle, but cuts out when lifted off, think the timing is the problem but I don't know what I'm doing to set it, is it a big job? What tools will I need? Can it be fixed without going to a garage? Any help appreciated!!

Thanks in advance

Check again in the daylight, and if the smoke is white, it sounds as though your injector timing is too far retarded and needs advancing.

Keep us informed.

I will be trying again tonight, and making a video if i'm still haveing problems. is it possible i could have messed with the timing? I've only moved the cam to do the tappets and not removed the dist pump, but did remove the injectors and turned the cam clockwise and anti-clockwise trying to get the valves fully open.

hope it runs by the weekend!

Good news...it started! :) just gave a good long blast with the gas and it idled, though I think i had the inlet manifold piped up wrong, is the top nozzle (above where the air take, from the air filter) meant to connect to the vacuum pump or the breather cap?

Lots of smoke and the exaust manifold bolts are rusted so the exhaust front pipe won't stay on!!!!

Attempting to advance the timing tomorro, is the inspection hole on the right or left of the flywheel?

Yup!

Make a mark where the pump is currently sitting. Then Slacken the pump, and turn it clockwise to advance the timing a few degrees.

Many say that you should disconnect the injectors, but as it is a Series III, I would just slacken the pipes where they come out of the pump, which will allow you to turn the body without putting excess strain on the pipes ... because they can become slightly brittle with age.

You should find that your billowing white clouds will disappear.

Let us know how you get on.

took the shed out for a quick drive just now, smoke has cleared up a little bit, but i seem to be suffering from a lack of power, possibly take the air filter off and check without? seems to have no trouble when out of gear revving up, just transferring the power when driving

first off you need to reset tappets ,when setting you must adjust rocker on valve from nine to one down but must be when open vlave is just fuuly open and only turn clockwise if you go past just fully open go on to next one and set its partner, did you fit 2 x washer in injector hole one copper the other steel, if servo brakes is butterfly opening correctly, check injectors by fitting upside down on pipe and watching spray pattern injectors dont whatever you do go near spray pattern

I'll try resetting the tappets this afternoon, I didn't fit the two washer for the injectors, just one copper one, which was all that was in them to begin with.

remember set when valve is just fully open not later ,steel washers in bottom os hole sat on injector shroud are the most important washer of the two ,they need pickling out and new used each time as they have crushable corrugation, without them or with old ones especially with new copper washers injector nozzle will blue with the heat and bugger nozzle ,its not usually a good idea to fit an injector that doesnt have clear ring around end of nozzle proving washer was sealing 12h220l is number ,injectors will fail if not fitted sooner or later
