Hello,

After a 3 year break from landy ownership my old land rover series 3 109 safari (ex kuwait, rust free chassis) with derbyshire turbo/intercooler 2.5 transit engined (fast) TIC parabolics/Koni suspension may be back on my drive for a lot less than I first paid and subsequently sold it for - talking sub £800 with MOT and tax needing not that much.

I have a few questions before I go ahead and buy:

1, The weak point has always been the gearbox and I now wonder if it's possible to replace the std landrover 4 speeder with a 5 speed? Does anyone know if this is possible and if so what/where/how much etc?

2, The rear suspension looks to have dropped a few inches(tough life carting a trailer around) could this mean new shocks/parabolics or is there another fix like a rebuild of the parabolics or is it most likely to be the koni's?

That's all. TIA
Adam

1, Suppose you will put in the transfer box as well, that will give you permanent FWD. The Series front axle cannot deal with that because it has UJ's not the CV joints of Defenders. You could use Stage 1 V8 front axle that has CV's. It's possible of course but you will have to change most of the drivetrain. plus I think the gearbox mounts are different.
Plus any axle change apart from Stage 1, you've got the suspension to deal with as any later axle is set up for springs not leafers.
The Series gearbox can be rebuilt to Military spec which overcomes most of the problems like jumping out of gear. If you want an extra gear it is easier just to fit an overdrive for better economy.

2. the shocks have nothing to do with ride height, it is likely to be that the springs are shagged but worth checking the Chassis and spring mounts.

i used to have classic rangie with a transit engine and to be honest the gearing is all wrong, it was ok on the flat but going up hill it wouldnt pull a paedo off yer daughter ;)

Thanks Spiderman and Yella Disco.

Slow-up a hill. Not this one, it's freight train. Derbyshire Turbo's worked their magic and it shows. I took the overdrive off a few years back but it may be best to go back one per Spiderman suggestion.

It would be nice to drop in a five speed box, i see that east coast rover have one they put in for their US customers.

Thanks I'll let you know how I get on.

you never fail do you blakey, ffs read the thread first, he has got a TRANSIT engine in it ffs, i see you have soon got into the old routine again ;)

Scroll down side of page to transmission then press. It will tell you how to make a series gearbox from 4 speed to 5 speed and with a ford transit engine .The very question asked. A touch of sunstroke on your recent trip to Spain seems to have seriously upset you .Take 2 vallium and a glass of water. Dont think they will help you, but will give everyone else a bit of peace and quiet,as you come down to earth again.
