Hi

I recently bought a 1972 pertrol series 3 landy, I fitted a weber carb to it as the old one was leaking and I heard that weber carbs were more economical. I also replaced the oil bath air filter with a britpart perfomance one which seems to make it run a bit smoother, but I am still only averaging around 8mpg.

The fuel adjustment screw on the carb is screwed all the way in but it looks as though it should go in further. But it still seems thirsty and a bit rich, I've read that they are supposed to do around 15-18mpg. It does have off road tyres on it but I wouldn't have thought that would effect the fuel consumption that much.

Any suggestions on what is wrong with it and how I could make it get a few more miles to the gallon.

Thanks

Definitely something very wrong, you should be getting 15-20.
Any idea why the previous owner sold ir?
It sounds like time to go back to basics, timing, points plugs etc.
Don't forget mechanical faults can cause poor mpg, especially binding brakes. Can you get it to a hill, will it roll down in in neutral.
How fast will it go. It should run to about 70, but it's not unuasal for them to struggle to 60, but if it only does 35/40....
Which then brings the question, is it in high range, if it's stuck in low...

Thanks for the response

I bought it off a man who lives near me, he wasn't actually trying to sell it but he over heard me talking to someone about them and asked me if I wanted to buy it, he had only done 300 mile in it after owning it for 5 years, he's a genuine bloke.

I have put new plugs, plug leads, distributer cap and rotor arm on it and I can't say that I've seen a difference.

It does seem to struggle when free wheeling down bank but I haven't had a look at the brakes yet,

I have been to a classic car garage today and he's going to get me some new points and check the timing.

carb needs adjusting and or is shagged, at that economy a v8 would be better:D

choke stuck on ? . does it smell rich ? , does it die when decked ( choking up ) . ????

I'm looking to change the petrol engine in my series 3 for a diesel, How much of a big job would it be and what's the best engine to swap it for?
