well be interesting to see results eh.. all we can do is use our past experience but with out being there as you say..difficult to say.

This started after pouring oil in...I'd advise #1 test to be empty the oil and measure how much. If plugs are black then oil is getting in the cylinders which could be knackered rings or too much oil. As this happened after re filling surely the sensible and cheap thing would be to check that. All the other tests will come out wrong if there is too much oil present. Also, get a picture of the dip stick you might have a wrong un.

Compression tested out ok. Battery was flat , have recharged battery and now it starts , banging isn't anything underneath , mechanic states timing is out and creating knocking , drives but noisily , mechanic revved engine to the point where I thought it was going to blow up but temp never went over 1/2 way and it didn't , he is going to start be changing condensor , points and correct the timing so I'm hoping that will rectify the issues , has anyone got any experience of similar ?

Similar what?

Expect most have experience of changing points and doing timing. Shouldnt be too much of a problem.
Not exactly sure what the issue is now, if your motor is driving. Just the noise?
If you have checked all the usual things, timing, camchain, propshafts, levels etc, might be a good idea to just drive it around and see what happens.
It would be helpful if you could post a video with the noise on the soundtrack. Somebody might recognise it! ;)

Instead of blindly spending money on what you think might be the front propshaft then just remove it. Series land rovers are only part time 4wd so won't cause any issues. Even better is if you have free wheel hubs make sure they are unlocked an then you can rule out the whole front side of the drivetrain.

More information about the knocking would be useful. Is it at all rpm or only specific points? Is it at a specific speed? Does it do it with the clutch engaged and disengaged? When it makes the knocking is it followed by smoke or anything else. But from the two scenarios of over heated and low oil it would seem likely it was caused by one of these two things and both of which can be pretty fatal. Can I ask why you only found out the coolant and oil needed topping up when it was too late? It takes a couple of minutes to check the oil and coolant level and I do it once a week for my series 2 and before a long journey.

The timing won't magically change through an oil change. It sounds like your mechanic is taking a stab in the dark to sound like he knows what he's doing. Which if he did you wouldn't be asking on here still. Try doing what has been suggested on here before handing it back to the mechanic. Other wise you'll end up spending all your money on things that didn't need doing. Maybe take a video on your phone, upload it to YouTube and then put a link on here so we can hear the specific noise.

I had a strange knocking noise on my 200tdi in the series which suddenly appeared. Turned out to be the alternator belt getting trapped in the crankshaft pulley.

Open the bonnet with the engine running and pinpoint exactly where it's coming from. Be it the front of the engine, back of the engine.

..timing is now out but was okay before then its jumped a notch on cam belt timing due to violent vibration,if timing is out it wont run well at all def wont pull well..norm the only knocking you get on timing is..pinking which old school was advance or retarded timing , now all thats done via ecu and sensors ,,,plugs were black on 2 pots but thats cured it self ..but if you still got a dizzy pinking is easy done by getting engine hot and advancing dizzy till max revs then backing off...then take it up a big hill in third see if it pinks
first essential check cam timing..reset it, or damage engine.
all this from low oil and a refill??????????????

prob is today they are..technicians...not mechanics and with regards to ,,cars in last 15y ...its all..diagnostics, plug it in ya get a code ..done
thats why old defenders ect need a mechanic old school who has been trained to use his brain and knowledge not a diagnostics machine, put a technician on an old landy..hes lost...i did 5 yr apprenticeship...hard way..but aint a clue with diag machine...so im stuffed on new stuff. horses for courses
but with this guys problem...im lost...to much info keeps changing in to short a time..im out here

if you end up neededing an engine i may be fitting a 2.5 to my series 1 and removing the 2.25 currently fitted , the 2.25 has been rebuilt in the past and has had much spent

very sound advice

if he doesn't want it I might be interested, no rush on my part, mine smokes like a trooper and marks its territory regularly :D

i have some records for this engine detailing work done its out of a trial motor but burns clean and being from a trialer they did a lot of internal work including getting the whole engine including the clutch ballanced ! reworked valves and combustion chambers , head skimmed , cant rember what else but loads done , it runs spot on , only reason its coming out is either im fitting a 200tdi or a 2.5 petrol to my series one instead while i have the engine out to paint the pay and do minior welding , most likely ill fit the TDI

its still with mechanic , hes old school , not a laptop in site , he also wears overalls covered in dirt and not a shirt and tie which I always find reassuring

SIMPLE!! its a HYPOCHONDRIAC series 3
