I bought my 1973 series 3 SWB diesel a couple of months ago and havent been able to work out what engine it has! I'm pretty new to all this!

I've attached some photos and would be really grateful if anyone had any ideas.

My guess is that it's the original 2.25 diesel with an aftermarket turbo bolted onto it. But I have no idea really! Could it be an entirely unoriginal engine?!

What I do know is that it does 67mph with no overdrive (using an accurate gps speedometer app) and i feel a turbo surge in each gear!

My second question is that the turbo comes in very inconsistently. Sometimes I am waiting an age at max revs for it to spool up. Any advice on how to sort make the turbo come in more consistently and earlier? Any tuning or replacing of tubes etc?

My third question is which exhaust system will fit this? Ive included photos of the front pipe that fell off and the pipe on the turbo that it must fit to!

Thanks all in advance

Chris

It looks like a 19j td engine from a 90/110. The air filter looks mingin I. Would start by removing it see if it runs better

Boat anchor more commonly known as a 19j by the looks ......

Landrover "Mad aunty in the attic"

Best bet is to find a local fisherman than is looking for a anchor for his boat .....

Looks like 19j but the easiest way is the look at the engine number over the lift pump. If it starts with 19j then it's a 19j.

Glad I've got a petrol engine seeing that. TBH if it's running OK what's the problem? I'd rather have the 2.25 or 2.5 petrol.

Thanks all.. really useful!

Will sort out the air filter.

Any other suggestions for more consistency on turbo kicking in? Shorten the rod for more boost?!

And is there a certain type of exhaust to fit this engine when in a series 3?

That engine does not have a good reputation however if it runs well its ok to drive. Mine was ok until it started using more oil than diesel. If its running ok then that's ok but I would not be throwing money at it. Save your cash for a Tdi conversion.

19j's can and do last but they don't like being over revved.

No idea what the turbo issue is other than check carefully for split/delaminated hoses but my advice would be to be careful not to ask too much of it.

Before doing too much I'd give it a good service and clean up, check tappets, and put the new air filter on and see if it still does it.

19j, a bad one is absolutely terrible but a good one is great. One of the main problems with them is lack of maintenance.
Design wise, they seem a bit of a rush job by land rover to enter the world of turbo diesel by basically bolting a turbo on to a slightly modified 12j

As above, 19J Td is not a bad engine, but they do not like poor maintenance. I'd also agree that overboosting it will kill it, as will driving it hard.

I'd be checking all the above - I.E. tappets, pipes for delamination etc., etc.

To check the boost - I'd be fitting a boost gauge and seeing what this tells you - might be a sticking wastegate ....

The web should find you an exhaust for that - but I wouldn't go mad money wise...(LRdirect stock NTC4426 - £14.51 )

I'd also agree that an upgrade to a Tdi is a much better bet, and I'd be nervous of spending more than loose change on keeping that engine - unless the rest of the vehicle is a peach and has some historic value.... ( which might be unlikely).

At the time my one went tits up TDi's were still rare second hand and very expensive so I put an Isuzu 2.8 in it which made it great. I then added a Jeremy Fearns intercooler which made it fantastic, way better than the Tdi's of the day. I still regret selling that Landy!

Ouch! yep, I reckon I'd regret selling that too - even though my Tdi has has a Fearn IC on it
