hi all, i have a 1977 series 3 lwb with a knackered engine. its stopped working altogether, glow plugs packed up, was really smokey when it did run and the alternator doesnt charge. xorst rusted away, leaks oil so generally not in a good way...
could i fit a 90 engine or 200/300tdi defender engine relatively easily, or should i try and source a good replacement series engine?
any advice would be much appreciated!
cheers

Easier to fit, Engine last longer as it is under less stress and a series standard transmission can cope with it.

I see, I'm also going to stick a Tdi in me series 3 some time, just wondering, what do they rev to roughly? Ie redline? And what kind of bhp does the un turbo charged mod kick out?

who cares - redline just above tickover.....

bhp - slightly more than a mouse farting.

Tdi with turbo does fit.

LWB have a chassis clearance issue but that can be sorted. A Defender engine will emlinate the clearance issues, or Defender manifolds on a Discovery engine. SWB is easier.

Series box handles about 150ft/lbs of torque so with a little restaint on the right foot the box will be ok. Those that I know with this setup are happy with it. Some choose to go with RRC diffs as the Series diffs can be a little low geared for an 110bhp engine :)

depends what v8 you get. if its an old classic or 90 one a tdi will **** on it.
tdi's are easy to sort plus they will bolt straight to the box without a plate.
unless its a Good 3.9 efi then i wouldnt bother. a lot less things to go wrong with a diesel in my opinion.
Have spent the last week trying to get a 3.9 going, now i believe the ecu is fooked. a diesel would have been going in under an hour!

3.9 on carbs for me and i will **** any doisel reet arf to 90mph

Also, just to clear it up, are the engine mounts on a series 3 and a disco tdi the same or will I have to move them somehow?

they will line up on a 200tdi disco engine by swapping the mounts off yer series lump, but not a defender 200 (you will need the mount under the pump and mod the chassis i think) or a 300 as they are further back.

Agreed i've always found 3.9's ok with a lot more useable power. A well tuned one on carbs will quite often be better than stock injection.
just everyone who says oh i've got a v8 mine goes like stink, its normally a knackered old solex fed 3.5 that is putting out about 80bhp and is all noise and no go.
I have nothing against them they can be fantasically tractable and reliable engines if you have a good one. which at the moment i dont and its right ****ing me off. Its fooked!
