Right, after sleeping on it last night, I've been told so many times that these are easy to work on, so.....

I'm gonna have a go at doing the brakes myself. I know it will probably need new shoes etc, but what else do I need to get? Visiting the local autoparts this morning to order stuff up.

So I need a set of shoes, linings? New drums?(!) anything else that should really be replaced rather than re-used when doing the shoes?

Thanks and wish me luck! Dont spose there is a 'how to' guide for this anywhere??
 
Dunno bout the parts - I'm in a similiar boat meself - but the Haines manual seems to cover how to do most things. And of course this forum is great when you get stuck on summit.

Bite the bullet and have a bash - I've found it's a blast just rolling up the sleeves and wading in there - even better when it goes right.

cheers! Spoke to the local parts guys, but it seems expensive. They also said I should change the wheel 'somethings' aswell. The parts alone came to about £300!!! Surely that cant be right? I was thkning of 50/60 quid. How can I tell if the drums are badly worn?

get yourself the LR parts book - these have exploded diagrams of everything on your vehicle - about £50 but worth it

they also have part numbers - then dismantle and replace only those items you find to be worn

dont go to your local parts place - go to craddocks or anyone of the numberous LR parts dealers

you can buy entire LRs for much less than £300
 
cheers. Thought that - i only paid £500 for the entire thing!!

What about buying direct from LR? There is a main dealership about 15mins from me, but I just assumed they'd be ridiculous prices!

Does anyone know the genuine Part Numbers for the shoes and drums required?

lol. I've downloaded that parts book for now - cheers for that. Shame you cant buy online, are these people trade only?

Gonna strip the entire thing on one wheel tonight and post some pics up for advice on what needs replacing if it doesnt get too dark!

RTC9841 - the parts book you need

 
take it apart and have a look.

but basically your looking at shoes, upper/lower springs, possible wheel cylinders. dont worry about drums until you have checked their condition.

your also likely to twist/break the solid pipe if it corroded so it might be best to get a pipe flair kit and some copper pipe. 3/16"? thats what the drums on my 90 are anyway.

thanks, will do. Where do you quote your prices from? My local places are more like shoes - £40 per set (4), springs £5each and cylinders £30 each, and it's all +vat!?

Are the pipes easy to replace?
 
you can buy a complete brake overhaul kit from paddocks, not sure if the wheel cyls are included but theyre only about 6 quid each
 
You really need to have a look at paddocks mate, 300 quid sounds way over the top for bits to do that, if you haven't got much experience of things like that a good manual will be no end of help, take some piccy's on a digital camera if you're not sure of how things go then you can always revert back to the photo's as a reference, and just take your time, lay things out in an organised manner so you can replace them as they came off rather than just throwing all the parts in a tub and trying to sort them after. hope this helps:)
 
cheers guys, i'm confident in doing it. Found the overhaul kit from paddocks, will be ordering that and doing the work on saturday if the weather holds out and i dont have to work.

Will keep you all updated and no doubt will need a few more pointers yet!
