If,as I suspect, mine is a bizarre mix of petrol and diesel engine maybe I have the incorrect sprocket which has put the timing out, and why it smokes so much!

After a quick search it looks like both 568474 and 276133 have both been superceded by ETC5551 which has just one keyway.

Does it need multiple keyways though? If the chain hasn't stretched and the tensioner is working properly then the relationship between the crank and cam sprockets should be correct and so the cam timing is correct. There is adjustment to alter the pump timing. I can't quite see from your picture but it looks like there is some kind of "subtle" adjustment between the central body and toothed part of that sprocket?
usually the key ways are vital if you read up on diesel timing youll see cam will need to be when chain is tensioned at exact exhaust peak measure with a dial gauge ,which isnt just finding high point but points before and after and measuring the center

Ahh, yes, to keep the "no slack" on the driving side. But all of my searches for 276133 end up at ETC5551 which has only one keyway!

Just to add to your concerns the petrols before a certain time had cast iron cranks with a "P" cast into them the diesels had a forged crank. Simple sump drop to check. I have heard of converted petrols breaking cranks under load. I did however run a diesel top end on an early petrol bottom for years without problems. I do have a light right foot and mechanical sympathy though.

Indeed, and that's the one I found on eBay for £68. I'll probably buy the kit and if I can't get it timed with the sprocket that comes with it I'll get that one!

Oh no! I'm probably going to take the engine out to replace the clutch and crank seal, so I can check the crank then - thanks for the heads-up!

hopefully youll be lucky ive done quite a few and have usually needed the choice of keyy way to keep timing spot on its one engine exact ep is necessary so the dial gauge

I've been looking for one of these for some years, so snapped one up last week when I came across this. They seem to be rare as hens teeth!

Like you, I'm looking to do the timing to help sort out smoking issues. There may be other things going on, but the timing has not been done as long as I've had the vehicle and it can't hurt to get it back to its proper position.

I'm a bit worried as mine seems to be a converted petrol, I'm not sure how thorough they have been. I guess it's a possibility that it's still on the petrol camshaft, I don't know how different the profiles are but that could cause smoking issues.

Best of luck with yours, let me know how it goes!

Thanks.

It will be a while before I get to do mine, but I had been looking out for one of these multi-keyway sprockets for a while, so snapped one up when I came across one.

Cheers,

PM

I've decided to take your advice and buy one of those sprockets after all, I want to get the timing right!

I applaud your fortitude, if it was mine, I'd change the engine for one that isn't so mongrel.

Col

I am tempted to change it, especially now that I've just got an email telling me the sprocket is out of stock! They think they'll have some back in next week, so I'll wait.

Dial gauges are for poofs by the way.

A plastic drinking straw and a blob of plasticine on the rocker is perfect and used throughout the aircraft industry. :D

Just received purchased timing gear and guess what? It's the single keyway version ETC 5551 (formerly 568474). Currently negotiating replacement / return for refund.

Not Happy.

That's not good! Just after I paid for mine they sent an email saying they were out of stock and they should have some in towards the end of this week. Hopefully that is the 6 way version, and hopefully they'll be able to send that to you. But seeing as nobody else appears to be selling the 6-way, it seems a little unlikely that they have a source. And the price is very expensive for a single keyway!

We'll have to wait and see I guess!

So it is going back. Return accepted.

In discussion with the supplier, I was told they just linked P/N 276133 to ETC 5551 and that there was no difference. One would hope that a classic car specialist would know the difference........

Oh no, so it doesn't match their displayed picture!

I'm going to contact them before they send it to me!
