Tonight my series 3 has developed a slight tapping noise from the top end. Checked injectors and the noise doesn't go when they are cracked off.
Can anyone give me any ideas before an internal investigation is carried out?

injector pump?? my 300 tdi is tapping from there

Someone on another forum seems to think manifold but there is no blowing from the manifold itself so I'm rather stumped at the min

Tappets? I had a weird tapping sound and it turned out to be one the injectors leaking very slightly. See if you can narrow the area down.

Noisy tappet try dripping oil on them whilst cover is off, and adjusting them if req.

A well known issue with those engines are the prechambers. If they come out of position they will make a tapping sound. When this happens, you should not drive any longer, or your engine will be ruined.

What was the resulting tapping sound made by?

I would check all tappet clearances and then run engine with rocker cover off , too. Big and valve won’t open
