In a seperate thread i have started the Cronicles of my 2a but i have a problem with my temp guage.

It rises to just below the red. Sometimes just into but mostly just below. Does not seem excessively hot. It has a new sender and replacement instruments over the years.
The regulator is new and made no difference to needle position.
Over the years would there have been differently matched sensor and guages on a series or are they interchangeable?

Sure someone would have an idea.

Meant to say that ever since i finished spending 3 years restoring in the spring.
It was diesel but now back to original petrol. But most bits swapped in or out.

The sensor needs to be the right one for the gauge

Suspected as much.

Think i will post a picture of my gauge and see if its origins can be established.
Not sure whats it off.

My 2A has an ammeter in that position and no temp gauge. Guess yours is later

Instruments have been swapped several times. When i got it it was sporting a series 3 bulkhead and series 3 guages. I have swapped back to original series 2a dash and gauges of unknown origin.

Have you got a multimeter? If you measure across the terminals on the back, and then do the same for the sender I'll check what I have on the sender. My gauge is 225 Ohms.

Thanks. Just got in from the garage trying to extract my mgf starter motor from the depths of the engine bay, and read this. Thanks that would be very useful. Will be out there tomorrow and will check.
Just to double check on the sender as electrics not my best thing will check between the terminal and the body of the sender when cold?.

I'll measure my sender cold and hot - it might help someone else.

But if the senders are the same it's vaguely possible that one of the two coils in the gauge is duff, and that might also explain a low reading. (It's only a guess - I've just mended my fuel gauge in which both coils had broken conductors, and have no idea if only one coil would get it moving).

Right have managed to get some readings. The gauge had a reading of 61.1 (with the meter set to 200) Managed to take a check reading off a series 3 gauge , which to to be honest think mine is as well and that was 60. So basically the same.

Checked the sender cold. Had no reading. but initial voltage of 9v. Presumably the voltage regulator controls this. Battery at 12,65 v.
As it warmed up, just above the white it was 105ohms with a rad temp of about 53oC.
Just below 1/2 way had reading of 80 ohms and temp top centre of rad of 67oC
Center of N 60ohms and temp 73oc
Final reading was 51ohms and 80oC. See picture of gauge reading
Displayed hotter in past just below ed but a bit cooler weather today. TBH think its a gauge / sender problem as opposed to actual engine over heating. Just in the summer did worry myself at times. Thought it might be as easy as having the wrong sender to the wrong gauge. May be it is but i just don't Know the answer yet.

Also annoyingly noticed a minor weep top corner of the rad, As the rad has only done a couple of hundred miles am a bit annoyed. As most of that times its been in storage awaiting refitting. Have to see if I can solder as very minor.

Apologies, the meter at the workshop's battery was flat... I'll get it tomorrow.

BUT. That's exactly where my petrol SIII gauge sits, and very occasionally goes into the red. I don't think you have a problem
