I had joined a couple of series owners groups on facebook and had had a couple of comments saying what a nice series 2a I had, got a bit confused as it's a 3, turns out it has a 2a Grille on the front, is there anywhere that sells original series 3 Grilles or will I have to go second hand.

I'm no expert but that looks like very late 2a, maybe you've got some crossover going on
The lights were moved to the wing, late 60s and the 3 came out early 70s

the grille you have is for a very late series 2a with lights in the wings. it is the most sought after grille called maltese cross. If you have the speedo in front of the steering wheel its a series 3 if its in front of the gear lever then series 2a

The speedo is in front of the steering wheel, I checked the chassis number and it adds up with the registration documents & that it is a series 3, it was just a couple of people telling me I had a 2a that made me doubt myself. I've seen the price of the grille I have, quite a lot of money. I prefer the look of it to the proper series 3 one.

^^^What he said. If you look at it there's no fading where the plastic grill was and just about everyone I've seen has a faded halo when its been removed. I'd say it looks original and keep it as a talking point.

You don't appear to have the two brackets that these grilles normally have supporting them at the bottom. That doesn't mean anything specifically.. they could have had grilles to use up but no more brackets for them.. :)

While it is quite true Land rover would use up previous model bits from the parts bin [ I had an early 2 with a one gearbox ] in this case I think your grill is a retrofit.
In your pic I recon I see the screw holes each side of the badge in the same place as where my 3's fixings are. Also the lower screws are on about the right spot for the 3 grill.

I have a 3 grille and need that grille. I'd be happy to swap :p

Though i am jealous and you'd be wise to keep it.
As above. I have an original series 3 plastic grill going spare from when I swapped to the Maltese cross that you have fitted because it looks much more classic than the plastic. It cost me an absolute fortune, and took about 12 months to actually find one. Original or not I would definitely keep it. You can buy rep productions of Correct mounting brackets which is what I did to fit mine.

I prefer this one to the series 3 one, I had an idea they were pretty rare when I tapped it into google and the prices appeared. I'll be investing in some tamper proof screws as well lol
