My 2A's dynamo is weak - almost certainly needs new brushes. You can buy new or recon ones without any problem - I've searched the web for parts sources. But if I'm going to have to get the thing out anyway, would it make more sense to uprate to an alternator?

If so, which alternator? Might there be issues with the alternator having different fixings and electrical connections? And might I wind up blowing all the fuses or bulbs, due to the higher power output that they all seem to have? (Back in the mists of time I dimly remember doing something similar to a Vitesse, and recall that it was less simple that I first imagined).

you need the alt and the brackets for yer engine. and some wire . oh! and don't firgit the plug fir thje back of the alt.something like a lucas acr alt will do. at the moment i can't remember which bits on the volt reg you need to short out to get it to work. but i can have a think about it.
you wont blow **** up unless you use a 24 volt alt, or indeedy make a right cock up well putting it it.
of course you could try doing a web search for the info.

Dynamo's can be overhauled. If you don't want the dynamo can I have it?

The dynamo commutators get covered in carbon as the brushes wear down. Some cleaning up of the commutator in a lathe + cleaning out the grooves between each part of the commutator and its as good as new. Fit new brushes and as long as the bearings are OK thats it.

i'd put the alt in..much more oomph than a dynamo.and the charge light wont be flickering at tick over when you got lights, wiper and heater on.

Given that I don't do a lot of driving in the LR on cold wet nights (that's what modern cars are for, eh?), I'm unlikely to need all the oomph of an alt. all athat often. The clean-up job on the commutator and new brushes sounds better. I suppose I'd better start looking for new brushes...

Thanks for the advice - anything else you'd like to add will be gratefully received.
