Hi I'm new to the landrover scene I have just been given a series 2a landrover don't know a lot about it as I'm waiting on all the paper work coming through. The problem is it won't start I turn the key and press the starter button nothing no click no crank nothing. Dash lights up 0 registers on amp meter. All the lights work and the fuel gage but if I put the indicators on the fuel gage goes to empty :-/. I tried jump starting I put the cables on the right way round and they started smoking (also tried the other way just incase same again). Hoping someone can point me in the right direction pls

have a look at the starter solenoid should be on bulkhead rhs behind engine, nuts come loose or solenoid can just fail

Solenoid is not far from the dizzy near battery. It may have a manual overide on it so you can manually engage it to fire the starter. Its got a button underneath i think? Check the battery with a multimeter, only a few quid in maplin or screwfix and a useful tool to have.
Bad earths are a really common electrical fault, check the main battery earth first.

You could use either of them. There used to be one available which gave you a push button underneath which made the start connection, but I haven't seen one of those in years!
