Found it! This is conversion using parts from a fork lift, lead acid batteries and around 70 mile range, I thnk its only around 40hp, no mods to the chassis and engine kept so it can be refitted if required..

On all the low end conversions I see, they keep the original gearbox. For a 4x4, I get the need to retain a transfer box, but the gearbox is usually the source of many of the issues I have, particularly spreading oil everywhere. There is no need for it as the motor has enough torque across it's rpm range. I guess it is just simpler to engineer a coupling to the bell housing.

Its a series 2 so guessing its 3 bearing anyway. Haven't checked the numbers on it I must admit.
The guy I got it from seemed to think it was ok but I have no idea, he did give me a full gasket set for it !
Its just I have a perfectly good old disco tdi with obviously rusted to bits body, so don't really want to rebuild it for now. If you're interested let me know but its probably not really what you're after.
Just recently it seems petrol engines have gone silly prices, they're nearly as expensive as servo pedal boxes:mad:
Thanks, Joe. Almost certainly a 3-bearing unless it was replaced at some stage. My last 1977 S3 had a 200di fitted (no turbo) and with Range Rover diffs it went like a dream - very much better than the brakes and the steering, so planning ahead for road junctions was essential!
