evening everyone,
i have a 1968 series 2a (2.25 petrol) and recently considered getting a disco for a first car and doing some off roading. after trauling through the disco forums and reading about all the expensive problems with them and then looking at a couple of rotton discos i have decided to spend abit of money on my series and get a second, more practical car.
so my question is: what mods are available to make a series more capable/reliable off road and what do you recommend? first thing i was thinking is some decent tyres...

I had my s2a for my first car and the 2 things that made the most difference were a set of parabolic springs and pro comp es3000 shocks. This made a big difference both off and on the road with more articulation and a smoother more 90 feel on the road. I then had a set of 32x10.50r15 khmo Mt which made a big difference with wet ground. It just depends how much youve got to spend?
 
thanks for that. i've probably got about 500pounds to spend. i am fairly mechanically minded although have any garage facilities available. but im up for trying anything that requires a socket set, some ramps, WD40 and elbow grease!!

I've just had a look on paddocks website, and at the Bearmach parabolics. there £75 and £85 a pair, is this good? anyone had any experience with these springs? and is paddocks a good place to buy from? and how easy/hard are they to fit?

(i wasn't sure about the 'extra long' bit)

Ive just renewed my springs all round with standard leafs. The difference is amazing. As I said elsewhere I don't actually think that parabolics will give you that much of a performance upgrade over standard leafs in a good condition. However, parabolics are much easier to maintain; I think that most folks who think that leaf springs are poo do so becuase their springs are rusty and no longer slide over one another. Cost is a real issue here, parabolics cost about twice the price of standards; With a budget of £500 you wont have much change after you've changed your springs and shocks (you'll need uprated shocks for parabolics). Unless of course you can get a set off e-bay well priced.

My advice, for what it's worth, is to invest in a set of good tyres. Which ones? Well that's another can of worms:) Other than that go over your Series with a critical eye and replace everything that is well worn. Preventative maintenance is the key with old uns.

Yes it's a reasonable price, I run on Bearmachs coupled with monroe gas shocks. Paddock are a reputable establishment and they aren't hard to fit.
